Men's Golf Places Sixth in New Mexico...

Brown ties for seventh-place.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (10/26/2010) - Blake Brown led Boise State University’s men’s golf team with an even-par 213 to place tied for seventh at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate at Las Cruces, N.M., Tuesday afternoon. The Broncos as a team closed out their fall schedule with a solid finish taking sixth-place out of 15 teams at the tournament with a 16-over 868. This gives Boise State two back-to-back strong performances heading into the winter break after taking fifth at the Purple and Red Invitational last time out, Oct. 11-12.

The University of Kansas rallied to take the team title carding a three-round total of 6-over 858 to out pace UNLV by one stroke at 859 (+7). Boise State shot a third-round score of 1-under 283 today for its best 18 holes of the competition. Overall the Broncos matched their last tournament score from the Purple and Red Invitational in Layton, Utah, by carding a 868. However, this was a par-71 course giving them a higher par result of 16-over. It also marks two-straight tournaments where the Broncos have been in contention to the end falling by 10 strokes to day and 11 last time out.

Blake Brown remained solid through the fourth tournament of the fall leading Boise State with his second straight top-10 finish and third top-20 result of the year. On Tuesday he shot an even-par 71 to give him a three-round score of even-par 213 (68-74-71) to finish in a three-way tie for seventh-place out of 84 participants, a team-best individual placing for the fall schedule.

Brown finished the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate 5 strokes out of first place where New Mexico State’s Tim Madigan and Idaho’s Matt Rawitzer tied for medalist honors with scores of 5-under 208.

Scott Spiewak recorded his second-consecutive top-20 finish this week taking 12th-place overall with a 2-over 215. The junior from Arizona fired a 2-over 73 this afternoon to go with yesterday’s 73 (+2) on the first 18 and 69 (-2) on the second. He matched his best overall score, 215, of the year while recording his top finish of the fall.

Taeksoo Kim turned in the third-best result for the Broncos in New Mexico tallying a final score of 9-over 222 to place in a three-way tie for 30th. The sophomore shot a season-low 1-under 70 in today’s final session to move up 16 positions on the leaderboard.

Taylor Porter came in fourth on the Bronco roster rallying from a 79 (+8) on yesterday’s second round by shaving 10 strokes off to card a 2-under 69 this afternoon. He closed out the event strong moving up 23 places on the leaderboard to tie for 41st with an 11-over 224 (76-79-69).

Chris Byrne rounded out the tournament for Boise State carding a three-round score of 13-over 226. The senior turned in a 6-over 77 in today’s final round to go with yesterday’s 75 (+4) and 74 (+3) on the first and second rounds.

The Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate concludes the fall portion of the Boise State men’s golf schedule. The next time the Broncos compete will be at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational in St. George, Utah, Feb. 14-15.
