BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State wrestling team received yet another piece of national recognition, Thursday (Oct. 28), as the Broncos were voted No. 2 by intermatwrestle.com to mark their third No. 2 preseason ranking of the fall.
Earlier in the week the National Wrestling Coaches Association released its preseason rankings, which included Boise State at No. 2. In September the Broncos were also ranked No. 2 in the Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine Tournament Power Index. In all three polls, Boise State trailed only Cornell.
In the InterMat preseason team tournament-strength rankings Cornell came in at No. 1 with 98 points. Rounding out the top-five is Boise State (79.5 points), Oklahoma State (65), Wisconsin (60) and Minnesota (54.5). The Broncos are one of just two Pac-10 Conference teams ranked in the InterMat preseason top-25. Arizona State begins the season tied with Illinois for No. 10 with 31.5 points.
Boise State's No. 2 team ranking stems from an overwhelming presence in the individual preseason rankings, which includes three Broncos being voted No. 1 nationally for their respective weight class. Seniors Andrew Hochstrasser (133 pounds), Adam Hall (157) and Kirk Smith (184) all received No. 1 overall rankings to open the fall.
Hochstrasser is coming off a 2009 season in which he saw limited action, but does boast All-American honors after wrestling to a fourth-place finish at the 2008 NCAA tournament. Hall, meanwhile, will look to add on to the best season of his career in 2009-10 as he placed third at nationals to earn All-American status. Smith enters his final season at Boise State with the most impressive resume, however, as he is the only Bronco with two NCAA All-American honors (2008 and 2010), while also finishing runner-up at the 2010 NCAA Championships.
In total, Boise State has five wrestlers ranked individually to start the season as junior Jason Chamberlain and senior Levi Jones were also recognized by InterMat. Chamberlain is currently ranked No. 4 at 149 pounds, while Jones is No. 12 at 141.
Boise State will kick-off the 2010-11 season on Nov. 6 when the Broncos travel to Spokane, Wash. to face North Idaho College. The men return to Boise on Nov. 13 (Saturday) to host their home opener against Pac-10 Conference rival Oregon State at 9 p.m. in Taco Bell Arena.
