Second Half Surge Dooms Broncos in 71-57 Defeat to Saint Mary's...

Lenhardt scores 18 to lead Broncos.

BOISE, Idaho (12/29/2010) - Saint Mary’s used a 16-2 run early in the second half to seize control of the game as the Gaels defeated Boise State 71-57 Wednesday night in Taco Bell Arena at Boise, Idaho. The Broncos had cut a seven point halftime deficit to two when the Gaels exploded on their decisive run. Boise State was held to a season-low in points as the Broncos struggled to get their shots to fall hitting 33 percent from the floor. Sophomore center Lauren Lenhardt led Boise State on the night with 18 points. 

The Broncos opened the game ice cold missing their first 11 shots. It was not until Janie Bos nailed a shot six minutes into the contest that  Boise State had its first basket making the score 7-4 Saint Mary’s, Bos hit two free throws earlier. Boise State’s struggles continued as the Broncos fell behind by as many as 13 points with 7:54 left in the period at 22-9.

Eventually Boise State found some rhythm  rallying to within five points three times before the break, the last came with 2:47 remaining and the Gaels up 31-26. The scoring punch for Boise State came from sophomore center Lauren Lenhardt who scored 11 points in the period.

Neither team shot the ball extremely well during the opening half with Saint Mary’s hitting 35 percent (12-34) compared to Boise State’s 30 percent (9-30). Katie Gaze and Jasmine Smith led the Gaels with seven points each.

Down 34-27 at the half, Boise State opened the second period with a 7-2 run to pull within two at 36-34 with four minutes gone in the period. Unfortunately, the Gaels responded by rattling off a 16-2 run to take a 16-point, 52-36, lead with 11:38 left.

The Broncos never recovered following the Saint Mary’s run as the Gaels extended their lead to a game-high 17 points with 9:36 to go. Boise State would get no closer than 10 points after that. 

Boise State entered the game as the second-best field goal shooting team in the Western Athletic Conference hitting 44 percent on the year and the best from 3-point range at 35 percent. Wednesday night they struggled recording a season-low 33 percent (22-66) from the floor and 26 percent (6-23) from behind the arc. They also shot poorly from the free-throw line converting 53.8 percent (7-13).

Saint Mary’s countered with 40 percent (25-62) shooting from the court, 28 percent (5-18) from behind the 3-point line, and 64 percent (16-25) from the charity stripe. The Gaels out rebounded the Broncos 48 to 40 and out scored them 32 to 20 in the paint. Turnovers went the way of Saint Mary’s as well by a 11 to 14 margin, resulting in a 16 to nine advantage in points off turnovers.

Lenhardt led three Broncos in double-figure scoring with 18 points to go with four rebounds, one assist and two blocks in 25 minutes. Heather Pilcher and Diana Lee each added 10 points, a season-high for Pilcher. Lee added a team-high five assists to her total. Janie Bos was chipped in five points and a team-high eight rebounds. Kati Isham who entered the game averaging a team-best 16.8 points on the year was held to a season-low two points. It was only her second game in single-digit scoring, Isham had recorded four-consecutive games with 20-plus points entering the contest.

Louella Tomlinson led Saint Mary’s with 18 points, eight blocks, one assist and five blocks. Three other Gaels recorded double-figure points lead by Jasmine Smith with 15 points and five boards, Alex Carbonel added 14 points and four rebounds, followed by Katie Gaze with 13 points.

The Broncos fell to 8-5 on the year with the loss, Saint Mary’s improved to 8-7. Boise State will close its nonconference schedule Sunday afternoon when they host the College of Idaho at 2:00 p.m. in Taco Bell Arena.
