Garcia, Hughes and Oehring score first career goals for Boise State in victory.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (8/29/2010) - A trio of freshmen scored for Boise State to lead the Broncos to a 3-1 victory at Colorado College in Colorado Springs on Sunday afternoon. After letting Friday’s game get away from them, the Broncos took care of business today as they claimed their second win of the year on goals by freshmen Gabby Garcia, Tylyn Hughes and Katy Oehring. Garcia and Hughes came in off the bench to break a scoreless draw open in the final six minutes of the first half swinging momentum to Boise State with 2-0 halftime lead.
The first half went back and forth for the first 38 minutes with both teams having opportunities only to see them denied by the goalkeepers. Liz Ruiz, Bronco keeper, made four saves during that time span as did Colorado College’s Caitlin Hulyo to keep the contest scoreless heading towards halftime.
Enter Gabby Garcia and Tylyn Hughes who subbed into the match in the 28th and 35th minutes respectively to turn momentum towards Boise State. Garcia, from Murietta, Calif., scored her first goal as a Bronco in the 39 minute following a Rebe Wolverton corner kick. Garcia gained control of the loose ball out of a scrum touching the ball past the defense from two yards out in the 39th minute.
Two minutes later Hughes (Portland, Ore.) scored her first career goal for Boise State when she took a Ebie Harris pass towards goal then beat the Tiger keeper from 22 yards out with a lob shot over the head of Hulyo in the 42nd minute for a 2-0 Bronco halftime advantage.
Boise State wasted little time in extending its lead in the second period when another reserve player Katy Oehring found herself behind the defense following a Erica Parks touch pass through the defense. The Littleton, Colo., native was open for a one-v-one with the keeper winning the battle by firing from 12 yards out to put Boise State up 3-0, 53 seconds into the final half.
The Tigers tried to get back into the match following the third Bronco score attacking the Boise State goal with everything they had. In the first five minutes after Oehring’s goal, Liz Ruiz was forced to make four crucial saves and a fifth in the 57th minute to preserve the shutout early in the period.
Ruiz, a junior from Boise, would make a total of nine saves in the second half before Colorado College would get on the scoreboard on a Tiffany Brown penalty kick in the 81st minute. This was the second consecutive match in which the Broncos gave up a penalty kick goal. Her 13 saves tied for third most in a match all-time at Boise State.
Offensively, the second half belonged to the Tigers who out shot the Broncos 10-to-two on shots on goal during the period. The last shot on goal for Boise State came in the 52nd minute by Oehring who took both in the half for Boise State. Fortunately, her first shot was the goal in the 46th minute that gave the Broncos the insurance they needed to get the road win. Boise State did get other shots off later in the half but they either sailed wide or high.
The victory improves Boise State to 2-2 on the year while Colorado College goes to 1-1. Next up for the Broncos is the 2010 Governor’s Cup next weekend in Pocatello, Idaho, where they will face Utah Valley University on Friday, Sept. 3, followed by a big instate encounter on Sunday, Aug. 29, with Idaho State University.
