BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State volleyball team kicked-off their 2010 season on Monday, reporting to their first day of preseason training in Bronco Gym on the campus of Boise State University. Sixteen student-athletes reported to head coach Shawn Garus and his staff, who are serving their second season at the helm of the Bronco Volleyball program.
The Broncos will participate in multiple practices for the next two weeks in preparation for their season opening tournament hosted by Air Force in Colorado, August 27-28.
The Air Force Tournament will be the first of four preseason tournaments for the Broncos this season, including two road tournaments at Wyoming (Sept. 10-11) and at Davidson College in North Carolina (Sept. 17-18), as well as, playing host to the Northwest Challenge Tournament featuring Boise State, Gonzaga, Portland State and top-ranked Washington.
The Northwest Challenge serves as the home opener for the Broncos on Sept. 3 and 4, while the Broncos' first non-tournament home match will follow shortly after on Sept. 7 with Utah Valley visiting Bronco Gym. Boise State will face Utah Valley in Orem, Utah (Oct. 20), Weber State in Ogden, Utah (Sept. 8) and Idaho State in Boise (Oct. 5) in additional non-conference matches on the season.
The Broncos begin their conference play in San Jose, Calif., on Sept. 23 while taking on the Spartans and wrap up their 2010 regular season facing the Spartans for a second time on Nov. 15 in Bronco Gym. The 2010 WAC Tournament will be held in Las Vegas, Nev., at the Orleans Arena Nov. 22-24.
Coming off a very successful 2009 WAC Tournament appearance where the Broncos placed third, the team maintains their momentum into the 2010 season. Nine returnees reported to camp on Monday, including six of seven starters from the 2009 season. Seniors Alisha Young (middle blocker), Sadie Maughan (middle blocker) and Lauren Hamm (defensive specialist) return with the most experience, as well as, serving as pillars of the 2010 team.
Juniors Amanda Remy (libero) and Breann Nesselhuf (setter) will serve as co-captains for the 2010 squad and are joined by returning junior Elizabeth Griffin (outside/opposite). Three sophomores, Cailin Fellows (outside), Liz Harden (outside/opposite) and Kersti Whitney (defensive specialist/libero), round out the Bronco veterans.
Seven newcomers join the team, adding strength, talent and some experience to an already talented squad. Junior Darlene Nwagbuo (middle blocker), redshirt sophomore Jen Visser (defensive specialist) and sophomore Fiona Jones (outside) bring collegiate volleyball experience to the 2010 squad. Nwagbuo joins after playing two seasons with San Diego City College, while Jones joins the team after one season at South Dakota State. Visser began training with the Broncos during the Spring 2010 season after beginning her career at New Mexico State in 2008 and sitting out a season in 2009.
Four freshman join the Broncos as well, including Leah Stevens (opposite) from Scottsdale, Ariz., Casey Rose (setter) from Eugene, Ore., Brittany Reardon (middle blocker) out of Stayton, Ore., and Kristyn Kirschenman (defensive specialist) from Bakersfield, Calif.
The Broncos practice around 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. in Bronco Gym for the next two weeks. Practices and times are subject to change as the camp proceeds.
