MISSOULA, Mont. (9/19/2010) - Boise State University’s soccer team battled hard Sunday afternoon, but lost another close contest when the University of New Mexico scored in the 71st minute to hand the Broncos a 1-0 defeat in Missoula, Mont. Boise State played nearly the entire match down one player when Brianne Favatella was red carded in the third minute. The Broncos fought off the Lobos until late when NMU’s Jordan Craig scored the decisive goal midway through the final period.
The match started well for the Broncos when senior defender Malia Hendrix came forward and fired a shot at the Lobo goal 44 seconds into the contest only to see UNM’s keeper Kelli Cornell deny the scoring opportunity.
Unfortunately, things went bad quickly when Favatella was sent off with a straight red card.
The Lobos immediately picked up their pressure forcing the action into the Bronco defensive third. However, Boise State’s defense stood strong as they kept the game even to the half. Liz Ruiz was up to the task in goal for Boise State as she recorded four saves in the first 17 minutes following the red card. The defense then stepped up not allowing another shot on goal by UNM in the final 25 minutes of the first half.
Knotted in a scoreless draw at the half, both teams came out fast combining for eight shots in the first 11 minutes of the second period. The Broncos tallied three of those shots with two of them on goal. Lauren Hickok fired on target in the 50th minute followed by a Katy Oehring chance in the 57th, both were stopped by UNM’s Cornell.
New Mexico took five shots during the early moments of the second period. The Lobos opened the half with three shots in the first four minutes, however, only one by Jennifer Williams was on goal where Ruiz came up with the save to preserve the draw.
UNM’s Williams followed shortly after by firing a second shot on target in the 53rd minute only to see Ruiz deny once again.
Boise State’s Chelsea Robinson gave the Broncos a moment of hope in the 70th minute when she launched a shot at the Lobo goal only to see it hit the crossbar.
A minute later the Lobo’s Craig scored the decisive goal when she took a Roxie McFarland pass into the box. She scored with a shot from 15 yards out that sailed inside the left post for the game-winning goal at the 70:14 mark.
Boise State tried to rally immediately when freshman Gabby Garcia cranked a shot that was blocked by a defender. The rebound fell into Ebie Harris’ path who fired a shot at goal in the 72nd minute where it was denied by Cornell to maintain UNM’s one goal advantage.
Lauren Hickok was the last Bronco to get a shot off in the 82nd minute only to see it sail wide right. Ruiz recorded two more saves for Boise State in the closing minutes one in the 79th minute and the last in the 87th.
The loss drops Boise State to 3-5-1 overall with a trip over the continental divide coming this coming week. The Broncos will play at the University of Wyoming on Friday, Sept. 24, followed by a match at the University of Northern Colorado on Sunday, Sept. 26. New Mexico improved to 6-1-3 on the year.
