Boucher Claims Verizon WAC Swimmer of the Week Award

DENVER, Colo.-Boise State junior Amber Boucher was named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week, Tuesday, for the week of Jan. 12-18. Boucher won two individual events and powered the Broncos to four relay wins against Seattle, Jan. 14-15, as Boise State improved to 9-1 in dual meets on the season. The Keizer, Ore., native was victorious in every event she swam, including her first collegiate attempt at the 100-yard backstroke.

The honor is Boucher's third WAC Swimmer of the Week award this season (Oct. 6-12; Dec. 1-7), and sixth of her career. The Broncos have earned four weekly honors this season, and 12 in program history. Boucher is the reigning WAC Swimmer of the Year.

After helping Boise State win the 200-yard medley relay in the first event of the weekend, Boucher returned to the pool for her only individual event of the day, the 100 back. After a blazing first 50 yards, Boucher kept pushing through the final stroke to claim the Boise-West YMCA pool record and the fifth-fastest time in school history, 56.28. Boucher finished the first day of competition by leading off the Broncos' victorious 800-yard freestyle relay team. She built nearly a six-second cushion at the first exchange.

The junior took care of business in much the same manner on day two. The first event saw Boise State win the 400-yard medley relay with Boucher guiding the team to the No. 10 all-time mark in school history, 3:51.80, shattering the Boise-West YMCA pool record. She once again only swam one individual event, but made it memorable. Boucher led a Bronco sweep in the 50-yard freestyle by recording a 23.56, narrowly missing her own pool record mark. She swam the distance again in the meet's final event, leading Boise State to a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Boucher and the Broncos return to competition Jan. 21 at Washington State, and Jan. 22 at in-state rival Idaho.
