Boise State Tops Stanford 35-3

BOISE, Idaho - The No. 10 ranked Boise State wrestling team wasted little time asserting itself against Pac-10 Conference foe Stanford (7-8 overall, 2-2 Pac-10), Friday (Jan. 28) night, as the Broncos raced past the Cardinal in a 35-3 victory to improve to 7-2-1 overall this season (2-0-1 Pac-10).

Boise State scored wins in nine matches, which did include two wins by forfeit that helped put the team score out of reach for the Broncos early on. Despite mounting a 28-0 lead before surrendering a point to Stanford, it was the final match of the night that gave the 1,103 fans in Taco Bell Arena a reason to stand and cheer however.

After starting the dual at heavyweight, Boise State's Matt Casperson met No. 13 (InterMat) nationally ranked Zack Giesen in the 197-pound match to end the evening. After falling behind early with a two point takedown by Giesen in the first, Casperson then fell behind 3-0 after a one point escape by Giesen in the second.

Casperson would not go away quietly though, and a comeback was sparked after he received a penalty point near the start of the third for a locking hands foul by Giesen. Casperson then scored a one point escape with 1:40 remaining to draw the score back to 3-2. With just under a minute left in regulation, Casperson shot from the edge of the mat as the two wrestlers appeared to be heading out of bounds. His shot would score a take down with 00:50 left for the 4-3 go-ahead. Casperson managed to ride the final seconds off the clock to give Boise State its final 35-3 lead.

Casperson concluded a night in which Boise State would score five wins by decision and another two by major decision. J.T. Felix recorded the first Bronco victory of the night as he took down Dylan Rush by 8-4 decision at heavyweight to give Boise State a 3-0 lead.

No. 15 ranked Alan Bartelli would extend the Bronco lead to 6-0 next at 125 pounds as he beat Matt Sencenbaugh by 4-1 decision. A forfeit by Stanford at 133 pounds would give Boise State a 12-0 lead in the dual.

No. 18 Levi Jones scored the next win for the Broncos at 141 pounds as he took down Jordan Gray by 10-3 decision. The Cardinal was then forced to forfeit its second match of the night at 149 pounds to push the team score out to 21-0.

No. 2 Adam Hall earned the first major decision victory of the night at 157 pounds as he beat Kyle Meyer, 14-3, to remain a perfect 19-0 on the season. Kurt Swartz followed Hall up with a win by 8-4 decision over Garrett Schaner at 165 pounds to give Boise State a 28-0 lead.

The Broncos would drop their only match of the night at 174 pounds, but another solid outing from No. 1 Kirk Smith at 184 pounds quickly regained all the momentum for Boise State. Smith recorded the second major decision victory of the night with a 14-3 win over Spence Patrick to push the team score to 32-0.

Casperson's dramatic win at 197 gave the Broncos the 35-3 final.

Boise State will enjoy little turnaround time as the Broncos travel to Corvallis, Ore. this weekend to face Oregon State in the third edition of the rivalry this season. The two teams wrestled to an 18-18 tie in Boise back on Nov. 13. In their second meeting at the National Duals on Jan. 8, it was Boise State that earned the upper hand with a 24-12 win.

Boise State and Oregon State will square off this time around on Sunday (Jan. 30) at 2 p.m. (PST).  Live stats and video will be available through www.osubeavers.com.
