Cortney Paces Bronco Divers With Zone Qualifying Score

LOS ANGELES-Freshman Ciera Cortney qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships Saturday, at the Bruin Diving Invitational in the preliminary round of the one-meter competition. Cortney finished fifth, advancing to the finals for the second-consecutive day.

"The divers had another great day," said head diving coach David Legler. "They have been working really hard over the last month and it was great to see it pay off. Lexi (Pfeiffer), Tana (Loan) and Ciera reached new personal bests and Ciera qualified for Zones for the first time which is a great accomplishment."

Cortney was in second place after posting a 270 in the first round of the day. The score is No. 5 all-time at Boise State, and the best recorded at a championship-style meet. The Las Vegas native went on to place eighth in the semifinal round, and fifth in the finals.

Sophomore Lexi Pfeiffer joined Cortney in the semifinals, qualifying 14th with a career-best 230.85. Senior Tana Loan rounded out the Bronco contingent with a lifetime-best 216.45.

Cortney finished ninth, Friday, in the three-meter event.

With the conclusion of the three-meter competition, the dual meet between Boise State and UCLA became official. Using the diving scores from the preliminary rounds, Cortney won the three-meter event against the Bruins. The final team score is 178-116.

The Bronco divers will wrap up the three-day invitational Sunday with the platform competition. The swimmers return to the pool Sunday at the San Diego Relays.

"I'm really proud of how they all have dove over the last 2 days and I am looking forward to tower tomorrow," Legler said.
