BOISE, Idaho - Boise State University fell in four to the University of New Mexico in a Mountain West volleyball match Saturday night in Boise. Both teams were evenly matched as they battled through four tight sets in Bronco Gym before the Lobos pulled out the win 30-28, 25-23, 23-25, 26-24. Liz Harden, Fiona Jones and Elizabeth Griffin led the Broncos with 15.5, 15 and 14 points respectively. The loss drops Boise State to 10-7 overall and 1-3 in MW play.
The two teams went head-to-head all night playing four sets that were decided by two points apiece. The first set saw New Mexico rally from six points down for the win at 30-28. The second was a two-point set throughout with the Lobos taking it 25-23 for a 2-0 advantage heading into the break. Boise State came back in the third set leading it most of the way before winning 25-23. The deciding fourth set saw the Broncos rally from six down twice to take a late lead at 22-21, 23-22 and again at 24-23. Unfortunately, New Mexico rallied itself with three consecutive points to claim a 26-24 win and a 3-1 match victory.
Liz Harden led Boise State with a team-high 15.5 points on 15 kills (.146) and one block assist. Fiona Jones followed with 15 points from 12 kills, one ace and four block assists. Elizabeth Griffin added 14 points on 11 kills and six block assists, while Brittany Reardon had 12.5 points, 10 kills and five block assists. Breann Nesselhuf contributed 11 points, nine kills (.259), team-high 35 assists, 16 digs, one block solo and two block assists. Casey Rose had 23 assists to go with three kills and one ace. Amanda Remy added a team-best 19 digs to lead the defense. Boise State hit .198 for the night against a taller Lobo team.
Boise State had no answer for New Mexico's Ashley Rhoades who recorded 36 points, 31 kills, two solo blocks and six block assists. She was followed by Kelly Williamson with 16 points, 14 kills, one block solo and two block assists. The Lobos finished hitting .225 against the Broncos.
The match took a little over two hours to complete as the Broncos dropped their second match of the weekend. They will host the Seattle U. Redhawks Tuesday night before heading to Colorado to face the U.S. Air Force Academy Saturday night in a match that will be televised live on the Mountain Sports Network at 7:00 p.m. (Mountain).
