LAS VEGAS-Senior Damian Hume will represent Boise State men's tennis in the championship match at the USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas. Hume notched his sixth straight-set victory of the tournament to move into the finals.
Hume took on the No. 3 seed, Enej Bonin from Denver in the semifinals. Bonin posed the toughest test of the tournament for Hume, but the Bronco continued his impressive run with a 6-4, 7-5 win.
The rest of the Broncos' matches Saturday offered a glimpse at a budding rivalry between Boise State and New Mexico as the Broncos start their first season in the Mountain West this spring. Junior James Meredith dueled with the Lobos' Jadon Phillips in the other semifinal match in singles play. Phillips, the 81st-ranked player in the country, went on to a 6-2, 6-2 win.
In doubles action, Boise State's eighth-seeded pairing of Andy Bettles and Scott Sears took on Phillips and his New Mexico teammate Philip Anderson in quarterfinal action. The New Mexico duo entered the tournament with the No. 1 seed, and a No. 18 national ranking. Bettles and Sears fought to the very end, dropping a 9-7 decision.
The young rivalry continues Sunday, as Hume and Phillips will square off for the singles title. The Broncos have won three of the past four mountain region singles titles. The championship match starts at 10 a.m. (PT), at the Darling Tennis Center. The winner qualifies for the National Indoor Tennis Championships, Nov. 3-6, in Flushing, N.Y.
