Harris Bird Signs Three to Women's Golf Team

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State women’s golf head coach Nicole Harris Bird announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, Wednesday. McKenzie Ford, Samantha Martin and Samantha Pless will each join the Broncos for the 2012-13 season.

“I’m so excited to have these three as incoming freshmen,” Harris Bird said. “I believe they will make an immediate impact on our roster and help us out in the fourth and fifth positions. All three not only have great golf achievements, but they are also very strong academically – which is definitely a bonus. They will fit in well with our current student-athletes and push us all to be better.”

Martin, from Los Angeles (Torrance HS), is a four-time qualifier to the CIF State Championship, finishing tied for sixth individually in leading her squad to a second-place finish as a senior. It was the second-straight year Torrance finished runner-up at the state tournament after winning the team title during Martin’s freshman and sophomore seasons.

This past season Martin participated in the Callaway Golf Junior World Championship, and also competed in the event prior to her freshman season. She was a member of the Tiger Woods Foundation National Junior Golf Team in both 2008 and 2011, and has posted two top-10 finishes in American Junior Golf Association events. Martin boasts a 3.8 prep grade-point average.

Ford, from McKinleyville, Calif. (McKinleyville HS), is a four-time all-county recipient and a four-time participant in the North Coast Section Tournament of Champions, finishing fourth at the tournament this season. She has also earned medalist honors twice at the NCS Division II Championship.

Ford is a four-time class president and boasts a 3.772 grade-point average, and is also a three-time letterwinner in both basketball and softball, earning all-county honors in each.

Pless, from Seattle, helped lead Holy Names Academy to state championships in 2009 and 2010, and recorded top-10 finishes at the state tournament in each of her first three seasons – ninth as a freshman, seventh as a sophomore and sixth as a junior. She also won the Seattle Metro title earlier this season, and tied for medalist honors at the Sea-King District Tournament as a junior.

While playing in the Washington Junior Golf Association, Pless is a four-time qualifier to the state tournament, finishing sixth prior to both her junior and senior seasons. She is also the three-time defending District II champion for the greater Seattle metro area, and has captured a number of sub-district tournament titles.
