Hume Ends Run at National Championships

FLUSHING, N.Y.-Boise State men's tennis senior Damian Hume bowed out of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Friday, with a loss to No. 16 Daniel Nguyen of USC in consolation action.

Hume fell behind early in a 6-3, first-set loss. He battled in the second set, only to see Nguyen fight off break point after break point. Hume suffered a 6-4 loss in the second set to decide the match.

The tournament marks the end of the Broncos' fall season. Hume finishes the fall with a 13-4 record, including the Mountain Region Singles Championship. Despite the 0-2 record against top-20 opponents at the national championships, head coach Greg Patton is confident it will do nothing but strengthen the Broncos for the remainder of the year.

"It was an awesome experience," said Patton. "I'm really excited about how he's playing and where we're going to be this year. The meat and potatoes of the season will be in the spring, so just coming here to play at this tournament is an incredible appetizer."

Boise State will open the spring schedule with a home match at the Boise Racquet & Swim Club, Jan. 22, against Saint Mary's.
