ST. GEORGE, Utah (2/14/2011) - Boise State University sophomore Charlie Marusiak is tied for fourth place after tallying a 3-under-par 69 on the first day of the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational in St. George, Utah. The Broncos struggled overall as a team Monday afternoon as they find themselves in ninth place out of 12 teams carding a score of 12-over 300 at Sunbrook Golf Club. This 36-hole tournament hosted by Southern Utah University is the first competition of the spring semester for Boise State and will conclude Tuesday.
The hometown squad from Dixie State College leads the team competition by one stroke over Utah Valley University firing a four-man score of 3-under 285. The UVU Wolverines were close behind at 2-under 286 followed by defending champion College of Charleston at even-par 288.
Boise State is in a group of six teams within six strokes of each other at the bottom of the leader table. The Broncos sit at 12-over 300 which is seven strokes out of sixth place and 15 behind the leader Dixie State. Seattle U and Colorado School of Mines are tied for seventh two strokes ahead of Boise State at 10-over 298.
On the individual side of the event, Utah Valley’s Mason Carter and Utah State’s Benjamin Schilleman are tied for the lead at 5-under 67. Boise State’s Marusiak is only two strokes back at 69 (-3). Sophomore Taeksoo Kim turned in the second-best round for the Broncos with a 1-over 73 to find himself tied for 25th.
Boise State junior Scott Spiewak is tied for 54th at 6-over 78. Meanwhile, freshman Minwoo Park playing in his first collegiate competition had a round-one tally of 8-over 80, followed by junior Taylor Porter at 9-over 81.
