Boise State Softball Back on the Road

The Boise State softball team will put its seven-game win streak on the line when it heads back on the road for five games at the Santa Clara Bronco Classic, March 11-13, in Hayward, Calif.

Boise State will meet a slew of new foes at the three-day tournament. The Broncos will first take on Santa Clara. The host Broncos (3-6) are opening their home schedule with the tournament. Boise State will play Santa Clara Friday, March 11 (7:15 p.m., MT) and Saturday, March 12 (Noon, MT).

The second leg of the Saturday doubleheader will pit Boise State and UC Davis. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. (MT). The Aggies (9-9) advanced to the 2010 NCAA Regionals.

Tournament action wraps up Sunday with a doubleheader against Albany. The two-game set with the Great Danes (1-4) starts at 11 a.m. (MT).

This weekend brings the first meetings between the Broncos and all three opponents.

Live audio will be streamed on for each of the Broncos' five games.

About the Broncos
Boise State softball is in its third season. Head coach Erin Thorpe and the Broncos return 15 letterwinners and eight starters from the 2010 squad that finished third in the Western Athletic Conference.

Juniors Kellie Caplan, Allie Crump and Tazz Weatherly have led the Broncos through their first 17 games.

Crump leads the team in home runs (five), total bases (34) and slugging percentage (.756). She is also batting .400. The All-WAC Preseason Team selection has also led the way in the circle, starting nine games and going the distance in five of them for a 6-3 record.

Caplan has a team-high 22 hits, including one home run. She has come around to score 12 times and has driven in nine.

Weatherly leads the Broncos with a .408 batting average. She has hit 14-of-23 (.608) during the Broncos' seven-game win streak, including five multi-hit games.

Freshman Devon Bridges put together a break-out weekend in the Broncos' home tournament, March 4-6. Bridges was 8-of-14 during the five games with four home runs, seven RBI and six runs scored. She leads the team with 12 RBI. Bridges is riding a seven-game hit streak.

About Santa Clara
The Broncos are not having a problem at the plate through their first nine games. They have 24 extra-base hits, including eight home runs, and have scored 39 runs. Santa Clara is off to a 3-6 start largely because of a 10.48 team ERA. The Bronco pitching staff has surrendered 36 walks and 14 home runs compared to 13 strikeouts in 50.2 innings.

About UC Davis
The Aggies are winners of four-straight entering the weekend tournament, including a doubleheader sweep against Nevada March 8. UC Davis (9-9) is led by its pitching, boasting a team ERA of 3.61. The Aggie offense is being carried by Jessica Gonzalez (.407) and Alex Holmes (.386). The team is batting .241.

About Albany
The Great Danes (1-4) suffered a gut-wrenching opening weekend, Feb. 25-27. After winning the season debut 5-4, Albany dropped the next four games all by one run. The Great Danes have a 1.93 team ERA in the circle, but have only scratched out 12 runs and a .191 cumulative batting average. Albany's pitchers are holding opponents to a .260 on-base percentage.

Zell Unhittable
Junior Aubray Zell threw the first no-hitter in Boise State history, in a 12-0 five-inning Bronco win during the second game of a doubleheader March 4, against Southern Utah. Zell tied a career high wtih eight strikeouts in the performance. The only Thunderbird to reach base got aboard on a dropped third strike...Zell was named WAC Pitcher of the Week.

Broncos Trot Home
Boise State opened its 2011 home schedule by smacking 15 home runs in five games during the Boise State SpringHill Suites Invitational. It is the most in any five game stretch in school history...The Broncos hit a team-record six round trippers March 5, against Seattle...Nine different players hit home runs on the weekend, led by Devon Bridges' four...Entering the home tournament, Boise State had hit four home runs through the first 12 games of the season.

Hitting Their Stride
Boise State hit .415 as a team at the SpringHill Suites Invitational to raise its batting average to .320, good for second in the WAC. The Broncos now boast five of the top-10 batting averages in the conference, led by Tazz Weatherly (fourth, .408)...Allie Crump (fifth, .400), Kellie Caplan (eighth, .379), Holly Bourke (ninth, .373) and Devon Bridges (10th, .372) also cracked the top 10.

Boise State Streaking
The Broncos are riding a seven-game winning streak, tied for the best in program history (March 6-15, 2009). Boise State has scored 64 runs during the streak, which comes on the heels of suffering back-to-back shutouts.
