Boise State Falls to 14th at Desert Shootout

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (3/18/2011) - The Boise State University men’s golf team recorded its second-best round of the semester with a 9-over 297 this afternoon in the second round of the Denver Desert Shootout at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz.  Unfortunately, everyone else shot the ball just as well or better as the Broncos slipped down to 14th-place after two rounds of the three-day tournament with a team total of 9-over 585. Charlie Marusiak and Scott Spiewak lead Boise State after 36-holes tied for 31st with 2-under-par 142’s.

The University of Oklahoma continues to lead in the team competition firing an 18-under 270 today for a combined total of 32-under 544. The Sooners currently own a nine-stroke lead over TCU who sits at 23-under 553. Boise State is playing its best golf of the spring semester with its best round coming yesterday at even-par 288 followed by this afternoon’s tally of 297 (+9). However, the Broncos will enter tomorrow’s final round 41 strokes out of first.

On the individual side of the competition the pack at the top has thinned some with BYU’s Zachary Blair and Oklahoma’s Abraham Ancer tied for the lead at 12-under 132. The duo has recorded back-to-back 6-under 66’s at the tournament as they pulled three strokes ahead of TCU’s Tom Hoge and Oklahoma’s Eduardo Castiello who are tied for third at 9-under 135.

Boise State’s Charlie Marusiak was tied for eighth after the first round yesterday with a career-best 4-under 68. He followed that today with a 2-over 74 as he slipped into a nine-way tie for 31st at 2-under 142. Matching his two-round total is teammate Scott Spiewak who has shot back-to-back 1-under 71’s during the first two days of the event.

Rounding out the team scoring for Boise State were Chris Byrne at 6-over 150 (77-73), Taeksoo Kim at 9-over 153 (73-80) and Taylor Porter at 11-over 155 (76-79). A sixth Bronco competing as an individual in this tournament is Clayton Kosanovich who has shot a 3-over 147 (72-75) through two rounds.

The final 18 holes of the Denver Desert Shootout will be played tomorrow morning, beginning by shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (Mountain). Boise State will be paired with the University of Northern Colorado and University of Northern Iowa
