Aubray Zell Named WAC Pitcher of the Week

DENVER-Boise State junior Aubray Zell was named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, Monday, for the week of Feb. 28 through March 6. Zell went 2-0 during the week, throwing shutouts in each of her two starts, including the first no-hitter in Bronco history March 4, against Southern Utah.

Zell becomes the first Boise State student-athlete to earn a WAC Pitcher of the Week award. It is the first weekly honor of any kind this season for the Broncos and the fifth in program history.

The no-hit performance came in a 12-0, five-inning Boise State win shortened by the run rule. Zell tied her career high with eight strikeouts in the game. The Lakewood, Calif., native was nearly perfect as the only base runner of the game for the Thunderbirds reached on a dropped third strike.

The following day, Zell squared off against the same SUU team. She stifled the Thunderbird bats again, becoming the first Bronco to pitch shutouts in back-to-back starts. The Broncos won the game 2-0.

For the week Zell finished with 12 innings pitched, no runs allowed, 15 strikeouts and she did not walk a batter. Opponents hit a paltry .122 against her and did not manage an extra-base hit.

Zell shared the weekly honor with Hawai'I sophomore Kaia Parnaby who threw a perfect game during the week.

The Broncos return to action Friday, March 11, at the Santa Clara Bronco Classic. Boise State's first game is against Santa Clara, first pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. (MT). Boise State is riding a seven-game win streak, tied for the longest in school history.
