BOISE, Idaho - Boise State long jumper Eetu Viitala has been named to the 2011 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I All-Academic Track and Field Team.
Viitala had an extremely successful junior campaign, going undefeated with seven long jump titles indoors and earning four titles outdoors in six competitions. Punching his first ticket to the NCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the Kuortane, Finland, native earned an NCAA All-American Honorable Mention nod after his 22 nd-place finish in June. He was crowned the Western Athletic Conference champion in both the 2011 indoor and outdoor long jump competitions, earning him first-team all-conference honors in the process. He also earned one WAC Athlete of the Week honor (March 28-April 3, 2011) during the outdoor season.
To qualify for the honor, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
