COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-Boise State freshman Devin Madsen was named Mountain West co-Swimmer of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. Madsen led the Broncos to a 177-85 victory over Pac-12 foe Oregon State Nov. 3, in Corvallis, Ore., with two individual wins and leading off a victorious relay.
Madsen touched the wall first in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke races, winning comfortably in both. She posted a 56.71 in the shorter event, winning by nearly a full second. The longer race saw Madsen stretch her lead the entire 200 yards and win in 2:02.72, more than three and a half seconds ahead of the runner up.
The first-year Bronco remained undefeated in individual events for her young career as she was one of just four student-athletes in the Mountain West to claim victories in multiple individual races last week. Her time in the 200 back was the fastest among MW swimmers last week, while her 100 back was second-best in the conference.
Madsen, a native of Walnut Creek, Calif., also turned in two fast relay legs. Madsen kicked off the meet with a 26.79 lead leg in the 200-yard medley relay, putting Boise State 'A' ahead to stay. She ended the meet with her first collegiate attempt at the 50-yard freestyle to lead off the Broncos' 'B' team in the 200-yard freestyle relay clocking a 25.02, the best by a Bronco on the day.
The award is the first of Madsen's career and the first of the season for Boise State. The Broncos took home six Mountain West weekly honors last season. A Boise State student-athlete has now been recognized as swimmer of the week in seven of the 10 weeks they have competed as a member of the Mountain West.
Jessica Heim of UNLV was the conference's other co-Swimmer of the Week.
