Zell Dominates Second Game as Broncos Split

COLUMBIA, Mo.-Aubray Zell tied a school record with 14 strikeouts in Boise State's 4-0 win against Alcorn State in the second game Friday, at the DeMarini Invitational in Columbia, Mo. The Broncos lost to No. 12/12 Missouri in their tournament opener, 8-0.

Zell's gem was backed by a four-run third inning for Boise State (14-8), including a two-run home run from Mackenzie Whyte to cap the scoring.

Lela Work took the loss in the first game, giving up five runs on five hits in three innings. Kenzie Cole finished both games. Cole added two strikeouts against Alcorn State in the seventh inning to help set a team record for punch outs in a game (16).

Tara Glover led off the game with an infield single, but it was the only hit Boise State would muster in an 8-0 defeat at the hands of Missouri. Glover made it to third base in the first inning to give the Broncos their best scoring opportunity of the game.

After Boise State came up empty, Missouri responded with three runs in the first inning on three hits, including a two-run homer. The Tigers added two runs in the third before ending the game in the fifth. Missouri's third two-run home run of the game pushed the lead to eight, enforcing the run rule.

Kellie Caplan reached on a walk in the fourth inning and stole her fifth base of the season.

Tiger ace Chelsea Thomas, the national ERA leader in 2011, pitched five innings giving up the one hit and one walk while striking out eight.

Boise State 4 Alcorn State 0
Zell started her outing on a strong note, striking out the first four batters she faced. She made it through the second unscathed, but Alcorn State was doing its part keeping the Bronco offense at bay.

The Lady Braves threatened in the third inning. Zell struck out the leadoff hitter, but a wild pitch allowed her to reach. After two stolen bases sandwiched an error, there were runners at second and third with nobody out. A strikeout prefaced a groundball to third. Jordan Kreiger fielded and came up firing to home in time to cut down the run. Zell got another strikeout to end the danger.

Boise State was able to cash in on its opportunities in the bottom of the frame. Five hits and two Alcorn State errors amounted to four runs for the Broncos. A two-base error after a Caplan single allowed two runs to cross the plate. Whyte stepped up next and delivered her second home run in three games to add to the lead.

Both teams were quiet until the sixth inning. The Lady Braves broke up Zell's no-hitter with a two-out double to right center. Zell struck out the next batter to end the inning and tie the school record. It was the last batter she would face as Cole came on in relief for the seventh. Cole allowed one walk, but it was erased by a caught stealing.

The Broncos return to action Saturday, for two games. They play No. 12/12 Missouri again at 3 p.m. (CT), before taking on Northern Illinois at 5:30 p.m. (CT).
