FORT COLLINS, Colo.-Colorado State scored five times with two outs in the third inning en route to handing Boise State its first loss in Mountain West action 5-3, Friday, in Fort Collins, Colo.
The Broncos (29-14, 3-1 MW) staged a rally in the fifth inning as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Katie Engelbrecht punched a single into left field to score Tazz Weatherly and Mackenzie Whyte, but the first out of the inning was recorded at third base. Engelbrecht later scored on an RBI single from Kellie Caplan to get Boise State within two.
Aubray Zell suffered the loss for Boise State, falling to 17-9. Zell lasted two and two-thirds innings and allowed five runs on seven hits. She walked four and struck out two. Zell worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first and allowed two base runners in the second before getting a strikeout to end the frame.
The Rams (21-21, 1-3) broke through in the third. After retiring the first two batters of the inning Zell issued two walks to give the Rams a threat. Four-straight hits, including a pair of doubles, drove in five runs and chased the Bronco ace from the game. Lela Work entered the game and recorded the final 10 outs, allowing one hit and one walk. Work struck out two.
Boise State put two runners on in the sixth before a line-drive double play ended the opportunity. The leadoff hitter reached on an error in the seventh, but the Broncos could not extend the game.
Colorado State outhit Boise State 8-5 as no Bronco recorded a multi-hit day.
Kacie McCarthy went the distance for the Rams to get the win and improve to 13-7 on the year.
The three-game series continues Saturday, at 1 p.m. (MT) from Ram Field.
