Rally Comes Up Short Against Portland State

Gammel Leads Broncos with 20 kills.

SEATTLE, Wash. (8/25/2012) - Boise State trailed most of the day but was still in position to win it all before its rally came up short in a five-set loss (25-21, 13-25, 25-18, 22-25, 16-14) at the hands of Big Sky Conference power Portland State Saturday afternoon at the Northwest Challenge in Seattle, Wash. Alyssa Gammel led the Broncos for the second consecutive match recording 20 kills, including five big ones late in set four to help force a fifth and deciding set. Boise State falls to 0-2 on the year with the third and final match for the Broncos at the Northwest Challenge coming later tonight against Gonzaga.

"I was happy with the team's refusal to give up and the way they fought back all day," commented Shawn Garus, Boise State's head coach. "We came out slow in the third set which set us on our heels. We have to learn to play hard in every set and not let up, we cannot afford to start slow. I was happy with the way Alyssa (Gammel) played and how she led our team during the match."

Portland State took a close set one by a 25-21 score where the final four-point margin was the largest of the frame. The Vikings led most of the way with the Broncos coming back to tie the score. With the contest knotted up at 19, PSU rolled off a 3-0 run to get the momentum it needed to close out the set.

After tying the second set at 4-4 apiece, the Broncos rolled off an 8-1 run to seize control and a 12-5 lead. Boise State never looked back as it stretched the advantage to 20-10 then cruised to a 12-point 25-13 victory to tie the match at one set apiece heading into the break.

The Vikings came out in the third set fired up after being handled by the Broncos in the previous frame. PSU opened with a 4-0 run powered by two service aces and eventually put Boise State in an 8-1 hole early in the set. The Broncos tried to battle back from a 10-2 deficit but it was too much to overcome. The closest Boise State would get was four points twice late in the set, the last was at 22-18, before falling 25-18.

Boise State trailed the fourth set nearly the entire way but kept within striking distance. Down 18-15 the Broncos rattled off a 3-0 run to gain their first tie of the set. They then extended the run to 7-0 storming out to a 22-18 lead. Gammel led Boise State's rally scoring five of the blue and orange's final 11 points, including the set winner handing Boise State a 25-22 victory to tie the match at two sets each and force a fifth set.

The final set went down to the wire. Boise State trailed until tying the set up at 11. The Broncos took their first lead at 13-12 and regained it at 14-13 with a chance to win the match. Unfortunately, Boise State came up short surrendering the final three points as the Vikings rallied to win the set 16-14 and the match 3-2.

Sophomore transfer Alyssa Gammel led the way for Boise State with a career-high 20 kills finishing with a hitting percentage of .136, she also had 13 digs and two blocks for 21 points. Liz Harden followed Gammel for the second time with 12 kills, hitting percentage of .200, two service aces and six digs. Sophomore Brittany Reardon added nine kills, a hitting percentage of .261 and team-high five blocks, while Taylor Murphey recorded seven kills hitting .263 percent, one assist, three digs and four blocks. Casey Rose led the team in assists with 26 followed by Sarah Baugh with 22. Kersti Whitney led in digs with 23, while both Gammel and Baugh followed with 13 each.

Boise State finished the match hitting .195 percent with 58 kills, 58 assists, eight service aces, 77 digs and 10 blocks. Portland State recorded a hitting percentage of .246 to go with 65 kills, 60 assists, four aces, 78 digs, and six blocks. The Vikings were led by Jaklyn Wheeler with 24 kills followed by Megan Ellis with 16.

Boise State will be back in action later today at 5:30 p.m. (Mountain) when the Broncos take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs in their final match of the Northwest Challenge.
