Boise State Downs Gonzaga for First Win of 2012

Gammel is named to Northwest Challenge All-Tournament Team.
SEATTLE, Wash. (8/25/2012) - Boise State's volleyball team earned its first win of the season with a convincing straight-set 25-15, 25-17, 25-20 victory over Gonzaga in the Northwest Challenge at Seattle, Wash. After dropping a heartbreaking contest earlier in the day, the Broncos regrouped for a dominating win in the nightcap as they improved to 1-2 on the year. Alyssa Gammel led Boise State for the third time this weekend with 11 kills followed by Brittany Reardon with nine and Taylor Murphey with seven. Gammel's career opening weekend for Boise State was rewarded by being named to the Northwest Challenge All-Tournament Team.

"This was an all around solid team effort for us tonight," said head coach Shawn Garus. "We came out strong and never let up. I was really happy to see our younger players step up in this match, I thought Brittany (Reardon), Sarah (Baugh) and Taylor (Murphey) had good games for us. Alyssa (Gammel) continues to be a consistent force for us, I am glad she made the all-tournament team. Now we need to build upon the momentum from this match as we head into another tough tournament next weekend in Sacramento."

Boise State opened the match fast taking an early 3-0 lead in the first set, then never relinquished it. Gonzaga did a decent job trying to keep it close through the middle of the set but the Broncos were to much. Up two at 13-11, Boise State cranked off a 5-1 run to put the game out of reach as they cruised to a set one victory by the score of 25-15.

The second set started like the first with Boise State jumping out to a 3-0 lead. The Broncos and Bulldogs then traded points most of the way with each team occasionally slipping in a two-for-one. Boise State slowly pulled away taking a 20-13 lead. After Gonzaga attempted to rally closing to within five at 22-17, the Broncos closed it out by scoring the final three points of the set for a 25-17 win and a 2-0 advantage in the match.

The third set was a battle as the Broncos held off the Bulldogs for a 25-20 win. Boise State opened by taking a 2-0 lead only to see Gonzaga respond taking its first and only lead of the three-set match at 3-2. The Broncos countered with a 3-0 run taking the lead for good. However, it was not easy for the blue and orange who had to defend one rally attempt after another by the Bulldogs. Each time the Broncos took a small lead it would by cut or eliminated when Gonzaga would rally tying the score on occasion. Boise State answer each time with a short run and eventually took a five-point lead late in the set which proved too much for the Bulldogs to overcome as the Broncos claimed their first win of the year.

Gammel had a team-high 11 kills on the night to go with a hitting percentage of .346, two service aces, seven digs and one block. Redshirt sophomore Brittany Reardon followed with nine kills while hitting .444 percent. Taylor Murphey was third in kills adding seven, hitting .357 in the match. Reardon and Murphey tied for the team-high in blocks with two apiece. Liz Harden and Fiona Jones each contributed five kills to the Bronco effort. Freshman Sarah Baugh led in assists with 21 while Casey Rose chipped in 17. Senior libero Kersti Whitney had a team-best 15 digs.

Boise State recorded a weekend-best hitting percentage of .290 (42-13-100) to go with 42 kills, 39 assists, seven aces, 41 digs and four blocks. Gonzaga responded with .102 percent hitting, 25 kills, 21 assists, two aces, 38 digs and 7.5 blocks. Kylie Edinger led the Bulldogs with seven kills.

Boise State will be back in action next weekend when it travels to the Sacramento State Invitational featuring Sac State, Saint Mary's and Morgan State.
