Men's Tennis Begins Mountain Regional Play

The Boise State men are in Las Vegas, Nev., to participate in the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional this Wednesday through Sunday at the Darling Tennis Center. Teams from throughout the region which includes the states of Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and northern Arizona are meeting this week to decide the region's representatives for November's indoor national championships in New York.

The mountain regional is one of 12 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men taking place this weekend throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from each region will advance to the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, taking place November 7-10, at the indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, N.Y.

Wednesday's first round gets under way with the doubles round of 64 at 10:00 a.m. (Mountain), followed by the round of 128 for singles.

Boise State has sent seven members of the squad to Las Vegas for the regional championships led by four seeded players. Bronco senior Andy Bettles (7-2) enters the tournament ranked-21st nationally and as the No. 1 seed, he will have a bye into the round of 64 which is on Thursday. Bettles is coming off a consolation quarterfinals appearance at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., the week of Oct. 3-5.

Sophomore Thomas Tenreiro (3-3) enters the regional as the No. 8 seed and is ranked 123 nationally. Tenreiro also receives a bye into the next round on Thursday. The Miami, Fla., native reached last weekend's semifinals at the Battle in the Bay Classic at San Francisco.

Garrett Patton (3-3) is seeded 14th at the regional and will face New Mexico's Bryan Cunningham on Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. (Mountain). The fourth Bronco seeded at the regional is freshman Brendan McClain (2-3) at No. 21. McClain will face off against Utah State's Fredrik Peterson at 12:30 p.m. (MT) on Wednesday.

Three other Bronco will also been in action Wednesday at approximately 2 p.m. (MT) with Toby Mitchell (4-3) taking on Air Force's Jack McCullers, Abe Hewko (1-1) will meet the No. 22 seed Andrev Gorvachkov from BYU, while Brain Foley (4-2) plays Weber State's Todd Fought.

Boise State has entered three doubles teams into the regional draw led by the No. 3 seeded duo of Andy Bettles and Thomas Tenreiro who are playing together for the first time this year. They will move directly into the second round/round of 32 as a result of their seed.

The other two teams will play on Wednesday starting at 11 a.m. (MT). Brendan McClain and Garrett Patton (2-1) will team up for the second tournament in a row after reaching last weekend's semifinals at the Battle in the Bay Classic. They will open the regional against Idaho State's Josh Goodwin and Cody Miller. The third team for Boise State will be Brian Foley and Toby Mitchell who are also playing together for the first time. The duo will take on Idaho's Odon Barta and Artemiv Nikitin who are seeded ninth.
