BOISE, Idaho - Boise State lost a heartbreaker Thursday night to UNLV in a five set Mountain West Conference volleyball match in Bronco Gym at Boise. Boise State turned what looked like a potential UNLV rout of the Broncos into a barn burner as it rallied from two sets down to force a fifth set. The Broncos had a five-point advantage and three match points in the fifth set but could not put UNLV away as the Rebels rallied back to take the decisive frame 17-15 to clinch the 3-2 match victory (25-21, 25-16, 15-25, 25-23, 17-15).
Boise State was led by Sarah Horton who recorded her fifth double-double of the season on 19 kills and 10 digs to go with two blocks. Alyssa Gammel followed with her seventh double-double on 14 kills and 10 digs to go with one assist, one service ace and one block solo.
Brittany Reardon hit 33.3 percent for 10 kills while adding a team-high six blocks. Taylor Murphey also hit 33.3 percent for nine kills to go with two digs and two blocks. Sarah Baugh contributed a career-high 44 digs in addition to two kills, one ace, eight digs and four blocks. Casey Rose followed with 11 assists, while Hannah Hubbard recorded a team-best 16 digs. Freshman Abbey Vollkommer served a career-tying and team-high three aces.
The opening set went back and forth early before the Rebels slowly pulled away down the stretch to claim a four-point victory. The second set also went to UNLV who established control early then kept the Broncos at a distance to record a 25-16 win to take a 2-0 match lead into the intermission.
Down two sets, Boise State came out fired up following the intermission and quickly took momentum. The Broncos used a 7-0 run to turn a five all tie into a 12-5 lead in the third set. Boise State then held the Rebels off as it coasted to the 25-15 set victory behind six Gammel kills, four by Murphey and three from Horton.
The fourth set saw Boise State take the lead early on and hold it until late. Up 16-11 the Broncos watched their advantage evaporate as UNLV rallied, eventually using a 7-0 run to take a 22-19 lead. However, the Broncos battle back to tie the set, then score the final two points of the frame on a Baugh service ace followed by a Horton kill for a 25-23 win to force a fifth set.
In the fifth frame the Broncos seemed to take command with a 6-1 run that broke a 3-3 tie and turn it into a 9-4 advantage. The Rebels rallied eventually taking a 12-11 lead. Boise State responded with three straight points to go up 14-12. The Broncos had three match points at 14-12 and again at 15-14 but came up short as they watched the Rebels come back once more for the 17-15 win.
The loss moves the Broncos to 10-10 overall and 4-6 in conference play, while UNLV will remain in second-place at 7-2 in league and 12-7 overall. Boise State will host the third of a five match conference homestand this Saturday night when defending MW co-champion San Diego State comes to town for a 7 p.m. start in Bronco Gym.
