Broncos Prepped for 2013 MW Cross Country Championships

The Boise State men's and women's cross country teams will compete at the 2013 Mountain West Cross Country Championships, Friday, Nov. 1. Both teams look to have a shot at team titles, while a pair of Broncos will chase individual titles.

MEET SPECIFICS - The 2013 MW Cross Country Championships will be hosted by Air Force Academy, Nov. 1, at the Eisenhower Golf Club on the Blue Course. The men's 8-kilometer race will kick-off the day at 10 a.m. MT, while the women's 6-kilometer race will follow at 10:45 a.m.

► SIZING UP THE COMPETITION - Boise State's women have been selected by the MW coaches to finish second at the championships, while the men were picked to place third, according to the MW Pre-Championship polls released Tuesday, Oct. 29. The Bronco men are ranked No. 20, while the women are ranked No. 25 in the nation heading into the championship weekend. In addition New Mexico, who was picked by the coaches to win both the men's and women's titles, ranks No. 9 in the nation on both the men's and women's sides. The men's team race will be exciting with Colorado State sitting at No. 22 in the national rankings, while Air Force is ranked No. 28.

RACING BRONCOS - Emma Bates and Marisa Howard look to lead the Broncos. Bates earned the 2013 Pre-National title just two weeks ago and looks to earn her first MW Cross Country title on Friday. She will be pushed to the end by Howard, who placed third in last year's conference championship and looks to improve her placing this year. Also competing for the Bronco women this Friday are: Hayley Gregoire, Kate Jette, Lauren Lucas, Shelby McIntyre, Erin McLaughlin, Shannon Susbauer and Taryn Treadway.

Allan Schroeder and Aaron Back lead the men heading into Friday after leading the team this season in regular season meets. Also competing for the Bronco men are: David Elliott, Jeff Howard, Nick Lobb, Kyle Merritt, Drew O'donoghue-McDonald and Zach Wiles.

MW RANKINGS - As mentioned the Bronco women sit at No. 2 and the men at No. 3 in the MW Pre-Championships Coaches Polls released, Oct. 29. In addition both teams were picked No. 2 in the Oct. 18 MW Midseason Poll. The women were selected No. 2 and the men No. 3 in the preseason poll, released Aug. 22, while holding tight to those spots in the first MW Midseason poll released Sept. 27.

LAST CHAMPIONSHIP - The MW Championships will be the third for Boise State. New Mexico has claimed the men's and women's team titles in each of the previous two championships.

In 2012 Boise State's women finished in third (72-points), while the men placed fourth (102-points). Marisa Howard is the only Bronco to return this season as a 2012 All-MW honoree, landing on the first team last year after a third-place finish.

In 2011 the Bronco women placed third, while the men placed fourth in the team standings. Howard earned an All-MW Second team nod, as did Emma Bates who redshirted in 2012. The men return All-MW Second Team honoree Drew O'dongohue-McDonald to this season's championship.

EARNING HONORS- Emma Bates has been the only Bronco to earn honors this season, snagging two MW Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors, as well as earning the nation's highest weekly honor the USTFCCCA Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week, Oct. 21.
