BOISE, Idaho - Gordy Presnell, Boise State's head women's basketball coach, announced today the addition of two high school standouts in Shalen Shaw (Reno, Nev.) and Marijke Vanderschaaf (Sammamish, Wash.) to National Letters of Intent. The two newest Broncos are both over six-feet-tall and will join the program in the fall of 2014 as freshmen.
Shaw is a 6-foot-1 combo guard who can play both the point and wing positions. She was named all-region as a junior and is a two-time all-conference and one-time honorable mention all-conference honoree out of Reno High School. The four-year starter on the Huskies' varsity team has helped the team to a combined record of 76-13 over the first three years of her prep career. As a junior last year her team won the High Desert League, Northern Nevada Regional and the Nevada 4A State Tournament championships. She averaged 10.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.7 assists per game as a junior.
"Shay is a very talented multi-dimensional player who helped lead her Reno High team to the Nevada state championship last year," commented Presnell. "She has great length for a combo guard-forward player and is very skilled. Shay is an absolutely great kid and we look forward to the great things she will accomplish at Boise State as a member of our program."
Vanderschaaf is a 6-foot-3 post at Eastlake High School where she is a three-year member of the Wolves' varsity squad. Vanderschaaf was a second-team All-Kingco honoree last year and honorable mention as a sophomore. As a junior she averaged 11.4 points, 10.8 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. Her team went 13-11 overall and 10-4 in league last season.
"We are excited for Marijke to join the program," said Presnell. "She has great size, very good athleticism and comes from a basketball family. She also is a very good student and will be an engineering major at Boise State. She will be a great representative of Boise State on the court and in the classroom. We can't wait for her to get here."
