VERMILLION, S.D. - Brandi Henton scored a team-high 18 points to lead Boise State during a 74-61 road loss at South Dakota Sunday afternoon in a nonconference women's basketball game. It was an up and down day for the Broncos who struggled in the second half to get their shots to fall until late in the contest when the Coyotes had the game firmly in control. The loss dropped Boise State to 2-3 overall.
Boise State started the game slow as South Dakota took control early going up by as many as 10 points at 19-9 in just over six minutes of action. The Broncos slowly found themselves midway through the period as they began to rally.
Down six, 24-18, with 10 minutes left in the half Boise State caught fire as the Broncos rattled off a 10-3 run to take its first lead at 28-27 on a pair of Yaiza Rodriguez free throws with 5:14 remaining in the period. Boise State stretched its run to 14-3, including a 10-0 run on the back end, to extended its advantage to five at 32-27 with 3:13 on the clock.
The half then went back and forth as the Coyotes regrouped to take a one-point 37-36 lead into halftime following a late 3-pointer by Raeshel Contreras with eight secondes to go.
The second half opened with the Broncos scoring the first basket on a Lexie Der layup with 19:12 on the clock to give Boise State its final lead of the game at 38-37. The DakotaDome then became as cold inside as it was outside as the Broncos struggled to get anything to fall for them. Over the next six and a half minutes the Coyotes rolled off a 15-0 run to seize momentum and control.
Boise State was unable to recover following that USD run eventually trailing by as many as 18 points in the final half. The Broncos did attempt to rally late pulling to within eight points at 69-61 with two minutes left but could get no closer as South Dakota held on for the victory.
Henton scored nine of her points in the second half and nine of Boise State's first 15 points in the period to keep the Broncos in it. She finished with 18 to become the fifth different Bronco to lead the team in scoring in the first five games of the year. The redshirt junior added seven rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal to her stat line on the day.
Lexie Der just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, followed by Miquelle Askew with 10 points and five boards. Boise State was in foul trouble early with Engel and Reinhart on the bench five minutes into the game, they finished with four points each. Yaiza Rodriguez chipped in with eight points.
On the day Boise State shot 30.6 percent from the floor, 26.1 percent (6-23) from 3-point range and 68.8 percent from the free-throw line. South Dakota countered at 41 percent from the court, 40 percent (8-20) from the arc and 72.7 percent (16-22) from the charity stripe. Nicole Seekamp led the Coyotes with 26 points followed by Polly Harrington and Raeshel Contreras with 14 each.
Boise State will return home to host instate rival Idaho State next Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Taco Bell Arena.
