Broncos Comes Up Short in Loss to New Mexico

Lenhardt and Cutri combined for 33 points to lead the Broncos.

BOISE, Idaho - Lauren Lenhardt and Rosalie Cutri combined for 33 points but it was not enough as Boise State lost 66-58 at home to New Mexico in a Mountain West women's basketball game Saturday afternoon in Boise. A second half Boise State rally attempt from 11 down came up short as the Broncos pulled to within two points, 47-45, with just under eight minutes to play. Unfortunately, the Lobos responded with a 9-2 run to put the game away as Boise State fell to 10-13 on the year and 3-7 in conference play.

The Broncos, who never led and trailed by as many as 12 points in the first 20 minutes, were led by senior forward Lauren Lenhardt who record her seventh double-double of the season with team-highs for points and rebounds, 17 and 11 respectively. She shot 46 percent from the floor hitting six-of-13 shots with one 3-pointer and a perfect four-for-four from the charity stripe. She also matched her season high for blocks with a team-best three against the Lobos.

Rosalie Cutri starting her second game at the point for Boise State recorded a career-high 16 points on six-of-seven shooting (85.7 pct.) from the court to go with a perfect day from the free-throw line where she hit all four attempts. The junior from Australia also recorded a team-second-best seven rebounds to go with team-highs for assists and steals with four and three respectively.

Erica Martinez finished with six points for Boise State on a pair of 3-pointers in the second half, but no one else had more than five points for the Broncos. Boise State finished the game shooting 38.5 percent (20-52) from the floor, 21.4 percent (3-14) from the arc and 93.8 percent (15-16) from the free-throw line. The Broncos out rebounded the Lobos 35 to 27 and held a 13 to four advantage in second chance points.

Caroline Durbin led New Mexico in scoring with 25 points, followed by Antiesha Brown with 12 points. The Lobos shot 42 percent (21-50) from the floor, 45.5 percent (5-11) from 3-point range and 86.4 percent from the charity stripe.

The game started tight with the two teams trading baskets with five ties in the first five minutes before New Mexico started to get the edge. Tied at 10 each, the Lobos rolled off a 13-4 run to take control. Boise State trailed by a game-high 12 points twice late in the first half including the 38-26 score at the break.

The second half saw the Broncos slowly chip away at their deficit as Lenhardt and Cutri combined for 19 points in the period. Boise State which was limited to eight players because of injuries entering the contest, eventually pulled to with two points, 47-45, with 7:54 to go when Cutri hit back-to-back jumpers.

Unfortunately, that was as close as it would get for the Broncos as New Mexico responded with a decisive 9-2 run over the next two and a half minutes to go up nine points at 56-47. Boise State was unable to recover after that run as it watched the deficit grow to 11 before making a late surge to pull within six points, 64-58, with 13 seconds left.

The victory improved New Mexico to 13-11 overall and 5-6 in MW play. Next up for the Broncos is a road trip to Colorado Springs, Colo., to play at the U.S. Air Force Academy on Wednesday night.
