NCAA Championships Ahead for Heaney

March 20, 2013

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State junior Rachel Heaney will compete at the 2013 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships which run Thursday through Saturday, in Indianapolis. Heaney will compete in the 400-yard individual medley Friday and the 200-yard butterfly Saturday, at the IU Natatorium. Heaney was invited to the meet in the 200 butterfly.

Heaney's selection marks the third-straight season Boise State will be represented at the national meet. She is seeded 31st in the 200 butterfly, her marquee event. Her season- and career-best time of 1:57.39, set at the Mountain West Championships, was fast enough to earn her the coveted invitation. Heaney will also swim the 400 individual medley by virtue of achieving the provisional time standard.

Preliminary sessions start at 11 a.m. (ET) each day, with finals taking place at 7 p.m. (ET) for those who qualify. The 400 individual medley is the second event on Friday, and the 200 butterfly is Saturday's fourth event. The finals sessions Friday and Saturday will be streamed live on ESPN3.

This will be the first time a Bronco has competed in either event at the NCAA Championships. Of the 13 individual events competed at the championships Boise State will now have been represented in nine of them.

Heaney will be looking to duplicate the All-America status (top 16) of Boise State's 200-yard freestyle relay from last season and Amber Boucher's 100-yard butterfly in 2011. The relay squad finished 16th in 2012, after becoming the first relay from a Mountain West school to earn an invitation to the meet. Boucher, also a member of the 2012 relay, took 12th in the 100 butterfly in 2011. It is the highest finish for Boise State at the NCAA Championships and is the only time a Bronco qualified for finals in an individual event.

At the 2013 Mountain West Championships Heaney won the conference title in the 200 butterfly and took fourth in the 400 individual medley. She was also the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Champion in the 200 butterfly as a freshman. During the 2012-13 season Heaney has won the 200 butterfly seven times, lowering her own school record twice. She has now won the event 15 times.

The Broncos finished 39th in 2011 and 47th in 2012, scoring five and two points respectively.
