Basil and Watson Lead Boise State Against UNLV

April 6, 2013

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Boise State women's tennis fell 5-2 to No. 71 UNLV Saturday afternoon in a Mountain West Conference match played in San Diego, Calif., at the San Diego State Aztec Tennis Center. Morgan Basil and Sammie Watson led Boise State recording victories for the Broncos at No. 4 and 6 singles. The loss drops Boise State to 10-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while UNLV improved to 11-6 on the year and 1-1 in league. Boise State will face their host the San Diego State Aztecs (12-4, 1-0 MW) Sunday morning to wrap this weekend's schedule.

"First and foremost I have to say hats off to UNLV for playing a great match today," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "They are a tough team and the top half of their lineup is one of the best out there with two players in the national rankings, their top three spots have around a 90% winning percentage this year. We competed hard, got some good production from the bottom three spots, but couldn't get enough going to steal a win up top. We are going to make a few adjustments this evening and come out looking for a quicker start in doubles tomorrow against SDSU."

UNLV claimed the early momentum when the Rebels won the doubles point, only the fifth surrendered by the Broncos this season. Boise State lost all three matches in doubles by scores of 8-3 on court one, and 8-4 on courts two and three. On court two the Boise State team of Sandy Vo and Morgan Basil lost for only the second time this spring as they moved to 12-2 in duals and 14-3 overall.

Morgan Basil pulled Boise State even early in the singles portion of the match when she defeated Anett Ferenczi-Bako 6-1, 6-3 at number four singles. The victory improved her team-best marks to 13-2 in duals and 20-6 overall, she is the first Bronco to record 20 wins this year.

However, UNLV responded with four straight wins to clinch the match. The run began on court one where Vo fell 6-1, 6-3 to the Rebels' Aleksandra Josifoska, ranked 32nd nationally. UNLV's Nives Pavlovic then downed the Broncos' Teal Vosburgh 6-3, 6-4 to move the Rebels to within one team point of victory at 3-1.

The match clincher came on court two where Marlena Pietzuch battled hard against the Rebels' Lucia Batta, ranked 90th nationally, before falling 7-5, 6-3. Shortly afterward Megan LaLone fell 6-3, 6-3 on court five to Janine Erasmus to conclude UNLV's scoring.

Sammie Watson cut the final Boise State deficit to three when she recorded the final Bronco victory of the day on court six where the sophomore defeated UNLV's Iren Kotseva in a set three tie breaker 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-8 to make the final team tally 5-2 in favor of the Rebels. Watson improves to 9-5 in duals this spring and 16-10 overall.
