Collins Earns All-American Nod on Day Two of NCAA Championships

June 6, 2013

EUGENE, Ore. - Three Boise State track and field team members saw their first-career NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championship action, Thursday (June 6), at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.

Junior Daveon Collins earned his first All-American nod, snagging second-team honors after placing 11th in the men's 200-meter dash. The North Las Vegas, Nev., native clocked a wind-aided time of 20.43-seconds to place fourth in his semifinal heat. The time was a career-best for him, but does not top his school record (20.53) because of the 3.2 meters/second tailwind he had in the race.

Matt Post, a Rocklin, Calif., native, also represented the Bronco men, competing in the hammer throw Thursday afternoon. The redshirt junior placed ninth in his flight and 18th overall with a toss of 201'-1" (61.31m) on his second throw. He recorded marks of 200'-11" (61.24m) and 198'-10" (60.61m) in his first and third attempts, respectively.

Marisa VanderMalle was the only Bronco woman to compete Thursday, racing in the 3000-meter steeplechase semifinals. The redshirt sophomore from Pasco, Wash., clocked a time of 10:26.54 to place 10th in her heat and 19th overall.

The top-eight finishers in Collins' and VanderMalle's semifinals will advance to their respective finals, Saturday. Competitors earning a first through eighth-place finish are named first team All-Americans, while those placing ninth through 16th are second-team honorees.

Boise State's final competitor of the weekend is Emma Bates, who will race in her second event of the meet, the 5000-meters, Friday. The redshirt sophomore earned a third-place finish Wednesday night in the 10000-meters, as well as first team All-American honor. The Elk River, Minn., native is ranked ninth headed into the 5000-meter final, which is slated for a 6:15 p.m. MT start.

Live results of the competition are available.
