NEW ORLEANS - Boise State redshirt senior quarterback Joe Southwick was named to the 2013 Manning Award Preseason Watch List, the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced Friday.
Southwick was also named to the 2013 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List, Thursday.
The Manning Award Watch List was selected in conjunction with the release of ESPN's new Total Quarterback Rating (QBR), and the top 30 returning quarterbacks according the QBR comprise the list.
Total QBR measures a quarterback's contributions to scoring on each play (passing, rushing, sacks, fumbles and penalties), accounting for game context (down, distance, yard line, time remaining and score) and adjusted for opponent strength. It is based on a 0-100 scale and 50 is average.
Southwick's QBR for 2012 was 68.9, 16th-best amongst returning quarterbacks nationally.
Southwick, originally from Danville, Calif., started each of the Broncos' 13 games in 2012, completing 248-of-371 passes for 2,730 yards, 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His completion and attempt totals each rank seventh on Boise State's all-time single-season list, and his completion percentage (.669) is the fifth-highest single-season mark in school history.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
