Broncos Open 2013 Campaign Against No. 5 Washington

  • The Boise State volleyball team will be the first of three Bronco teams to play the University of Washington this weekend when the blue and orange opens its 2013 campaign on Friday at the sixth annual Northwest Challenge in Portland, Ore., against the fifth-ranked Washington Huskies (0-0) at 5 p.m. (Mountain Time).
  • The other two Boise State-Washington encounters include football on Saturday and soccer on Sunday, both in Seattle.
  • The Northwest Challenge will continue for the Broncos on Saturday with a pair of contests against Gonzaga (0-0) at 11 a.m. (MT) and Portland State (0-0) at 8 p.m. (MT). All matches will be played in the Peter W. Stott Center on the campus of Portland State University.

  • Record: Boise State is 17-17 in season openers since the 1979 campaign.
  • This Year: For the second year in a row the Broncos will open against a nationally ranked (No. 5) Washington squad.
  • Current Streak: The Broncos are looking to snap a five-match losing streak in openers.
  • Last Victory: Boise State's last victory in a season opener came at home in 2007 when the Broncos defeated UT San Antonio in straight sets during the Bronco Invitational.
  • Last 10 Years: The Broncos are 3-7 in the last 10 openers
  • At Home: 9-4 all-time when opening at home.


  • The Head Coach: Shawn Garus enters his fifth season in charge of the Broncos where he is 62-64 to go with a career record 177-184.
  • Boise State Record: The blue and orange will open their season this weekend in Portland, Ore.
  • League Affiliation: The Broncos are entering their third year as members of the newly expanded Mountain West Conference where they have tie for fifth-place in each of the two previous campaigns.
  • Preseason Poll: Boise State was selected to finish seventh out of 11 teams in the 2013 league race by the MW coaches in their preseason poll.
  • Winning Seasons: The Broncos are looking to add to their streak of three-consecutive winning seasons in 2013. They went 17-15 in 2012, 16-15 in 2011 and 21-12 in 2010.
  • At Home: Boise State was hard to beat at home in 2012 going 10-3 in Bronco Gym, including an upset of MW co-champion San Diego State.
  • On the Road: The Broncos went 7-12 on the road last season including going 5-9 on the opponents home court and 2-3 on neutral floors.




  • This is the sixth edition of the tournament which rotates sites between the four participants on a yearly basis, Washington hosted last year while Boise State will host next year.
  • The four schools who compete in the event on a yearly basis are Boise State (Mountain West Conference), Gonzaga (West Coast Conference), Portland State (Big Sky Conference) and Washington (Pacific 12 Conference).


  • Washington leads the all-time series 9-5, including 5-0 against the Broncos in the Northwest Challenge.
  • Last year in Seattle the match went 25-19, 25-17, 25-21 to Washington.
  • Boise State actually dominated the early years of the series winning the first five meetings, but the Broncos have lost nine straight to the Huskies dating back to 1987.
  • Washington enters the week ranked fifth nationally by the AVCA and was picked to place third in the 2013 Pac-12 race.
  • Last year the Huskies went 25-7 overall, 14-6 in Pac-12 play (t-4th) and advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.


  • Boise State leads the all-time series with Gonzaga by a 17-9 count and is 3-2 against the Bulldogs in Northwest Challenge matches.
  • The Broncos have won three straight over the Bulldogs including a sweep last year (25-15, 25-17, 25-20) in Seattle at the Northwest Challenge.
  • The Bulldogs are picked to place ninth out 10 teams in the 2013 West Coast Conference race.
  • Gonzaga went 9-20 overall in 2012 and 1-15 (8th) in the WCC.
  • They return eight letterwinners and five starters from 2012.


  • Portland State leads the all-time series with the Broncos by a 16-4 margin. However, the Broncos are 2-3 against the Vikings in Northwest Challenge play with wins in 2010 and 2011.
  • The Vikings snapped the Broncos' two-match win streak in the series last year in Seattle with a hard fought five-set contest (25-21, 13-25, 25-18, 22-25, 16-14).
  • Portland State is the defending Big Sky Conference champion going 21-11 overall and 17-3 in league play.
  • PSU was picked by the Big Sky coaches to repeat as champion in 2013.
  • Portland State has 10 returning letterwinners and five staters, plus the libero, back from 2012.
