BOISE, Idaho - Abe Hewko led four Broncos on the first day of the Dar Walters Tennis Classic Friday afternoon in Boise. The sophomore won a pair of matches on the opening day to reach the C flight's semifinals on Saturday. Brian Foley won his opening match to make the quarterfinals, while freshmen Lewis Roskilly and Danny Moyer both earned splits. The Dar Walters Tennis Classic continues through Sunday afternoon at the Appleton Tennis Center, Boas Tennis Center and Julia Davis Park in Boise.
Representatives from 12 schools throughout the Pacific Northwest opened the tournament on Friday. Over 75 men's collegiate tennis players are competing in five singles and two doubles flights. Boise State's four representatives went a combined 5-2 in singles and 2-0 in doubles on Friday.
Junior Brian Foley won his flight A round of 16 match with relative ease over Lewis-Clark State's Quinten Wacquez in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. It was his lone singles match on Friday. Foley will face Utah's Santiago Sierra in tomorrow's quarterfinal round. The Broncos' Lewis Roskilly debuted for Boise State splitting a pair of flight B matches on Friday. The freshman from Stevenage, England, opened with a two-set 6-3, 6-3 victory versus Eastern Washington's Eduardo Bringold. Roskilly then lost a tough three-set match 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinal round to Harry James from Montana State. Roskilly will move into the consolation bracket on Saturday.
Hewko had the best day for the Broncos reaching Saturday's flight C semifinals following a pair of three-set victories on Friday. In both contests he dropped the first set then rallied to when the final two to advance in the tournament. He opened with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win against Adam Rapport from Whitman. Hewko followed that up with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 quarterfinal win over Jared Madison from Portland. The sophomore from Palm Desert, Calif., will meet Weber State's Sanjay Goswani on Saturday in the semifinal round.
The fourth Bronco to compete on Friday was freshman Danny Moyer. The Kalamazoo, Mich., native lost his debut match 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the round of 16. He regrouped in the consolation quarterfinals to defeat Eastern Washington's Rendell Burghart in straight sets 7-6 (5), 6-4. The win advances Moyer to the D flight's consolation semifinals on Saturday against Lewis-Clark State's Sonam Phuntsok.
In doubles the Broncos swept a pair of contests starting with Hewko and Moyer downing Whitman's Petar Jivokov and Phillip Locklear 8-7 (4). Foley and Roskilly were the other Boise State tandem, they tallied an 8-4 victory over Weber State's Todd Fought and Hou-en Chen. Both pairs moved onto their respective flight's quarterfinal round on Saturday.
