BOISE, Idaho--The Boise State men's and women's track and field teams welcomed 11 teams to the 2014 Jacksons Open to begin the 2014-15 season. Three Broncos earned individual victories in the home opener.
Sophomore Jordan Ward claimed the first victory of the day, winning the women's high jump. The Rathdrum, Idaho native cleared 1.72m (5' 7.75") on her third and final attempt at the height.
The Broncos also secured wins in the 500m in both the men's and women's races. Fernando Martinez (1:06.14) edged out Kyle Kelley (1:06.88) to finish first and second in the men's race. In the women's race, Senior Megan Kelley won the 500m in 1:16.47. Kelley now has four first-place finishes at the Jacksons Open throughout her career (500m, 2014; 400m, 4x400m, 2013; 4x400m, 2012).
Juston Lindsley, a redshirt freshman, took second place in the men's weight throw and third place in the shot put. Lindsley hurled to a distance of 16.07m and 14.03m, in respective events.
Britlie Silvester and Karyna Armstrong had the best finishes for collegians in the women's weight throw. Silvester marked a 17.50m, while Armstrong recorded a distance of 16.41m.
Redshirt senior Marisa Howard competed in the 5000m at the Hoosier Open on Dec. 12, hosted by Indiana University. Howard finished second in the race, clocking a 16:07.9, a personal best and running the second-fastest time in school history. Howard's previous best was 16:49.04, a time which she set at the 2013 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The Broncos will return back to action next month and host the Ed Jacoby Invitational & Multis, Jan. 16-17 at the Jacksons Indoor Track in the Idaho Center in Nampa, Idaho.
