Broncos Start Season at Utah Open

WHAT'S HAPPENING - The Boise State men's and women's cross country teams begin their seasons Friday (Sept. 5) at the Utah Open in Murray, Utah.

MEET SPECIFICS - The Utah Open will be held Friday, Sept. 5 at Murray Park (296 E. Murray Park Ave.) in Murray, Utah. The men's 6-kilometer race will begin at 3:30 p.m., while the women's 4-kilometer race is set for 3:00 p.m. (MT). Admission to the event is free.

THE COMPETITION - The Broncos will take on BYU, Utah, Weber State and Westminster College on Friday. The BYU men's team holds a No. 9 ranking in the national polls, while also ranking third in the Mountain Region. Weber State's men also rank in the Mountain Region, sitting at No. 10. Weber State's women rank 28th in the nation while also ranking third in the Mountain Region. They are followed by BYU's women at No. 5 and Utah at No. 7 in the region.

NEW-LOOK BRONCOS - The 2014 Broncos will be a mix of experience and youth. Juniors Aaron Back and David Elliott return on the men's side while adding 11 talented freshmen. The women's roster brings back five upperclassmen in 2014, including Emma Bates, Marisa Howard, Hayley Gregoire, Rici Morrill and Tessa Murray. These senior women will mentor the three sophomores and 12 freshmen on the 2014 roster.

WEEKLY RANKINGS - In the 2014 USTFCCCA weekly regional rankings, Boise State's women rank No. 3 while the men rank No. 9 on the preseason lists in the West region. In the Mountain West Preseason Coaches' Poll the women were picked second, while the men were chosen to tie for third.

This season, the Broncos will be led by Aaron Back and David Elliott on the men's side, and national runner-up Emma Bates and NCAA Championship participant Marisa Howard on the women's side.

The season kicks off at the Utah Open on Sept. 5 at Murray Park in Salt Lake City. The Broncos will face off against BYU, Utah, Weber State and Westminster College.

The Broncos will then head to St. Paul, Minn., to race at the 29th annual Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota (Sept. 27). The blue and orange will wrap up the regular-season competition with a trip to Madison, Wis., for the sixth-annual Wisconsin adidas Invitational (Oct. 17).

Postseason competition will begin Oct. 31 with the Mountain West Championships. Fresno State will host this year's conference championships at Woodward Park. The 2014-15 NCAA West Regionals will be held at Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., (Nov. 14), and the NCAA National Championships will be at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind., Nov. 22.
