BOISE, Idaho - Two Broncos recorded double-doubles Friday, as Boise State rolled to a 79-55 exhibition win against Northwest at Taco Bell Arena. James Webb III scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Chandler Hutchison had 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with six assists.
Freshman Paris Austin led the Broncos with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Austin played a team-high 35 minutes. The 5-11 point guard was in the starting lineup for his collegiate debut and played a lion's share of the minutes as the Broncos were without senior guards Montigo Alford and Mikey Thompson. Alford and Thompson were both nursing injuries and are expected to be back for the regular-season opener.
"With all the veterans and older guys helping me out it's been much easier," said Austin of making the leap to the college game. "It's obviously a learning curve for me, especially on the defensive end, but I just have to give thanks to my teammates, they're always helping me in practice with everything and I just continue to get better at it."
Anthony Drmic made his much-anticipated return to the court with four points and four rebounds. Drmic also matched Hutchison's game high of six assists. The Mountain West's active scoring leader played seven games last season before undergoing season-ending ankle surgery. He was granted a medical redshirt and is back for his fifth year.
Boise State had 22 assists on 29 made field goals, including 14 of 16 in the first half.
The Broncos started the game on a 15-0 run, fueled by Webb. In the first 3:27 the reigning Mountain West Newcomer of the Year hit both of his three-point attempts and threw down a big tomahawk dunk in transition.
"I was really pleased with our first eight minutes," said head coach Leon Rice. "It looked like they weren't going to score on us and we could score 200, and that was pretty efficient. So we were moving the ball well, and- as you do in most exhibition games- we kept things really vanilla."
Webb had 15 points by halftime as the Broncos led 45-26. Boise State committed just three turnovers in the first half, while forcing 10.
Redshirt freshman Zach Haney played 21 minutes off the bench and scored nine points while hauling in 10 rebounds. The Broncos outrebounded Northwest 50-30, including 17 offensive boards. Webb grabbed six offensive rebounds and Haney had five.
Boise State will begin its regular season Nov. 13, at Montana. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. (MT) tipoff and can be heard on the Bronco Radio Network, including flagship station 670 AM KBOI in Boise.
