Broncos End Slide with Defeat of CSU Bakersfield

Feb. 6, 2015

BOISE, Idaho -

The Boise State wrestling team picked up seven wins against CSU Bakersfield Friday en route to a 24-9 victory at Centennial High School, the team's first Pacific-12 Conference dual victory of the season.

In the team's final home event of 2014-15, the Broncos (3-7, 1-4 Pac-12) ended a five-dual slide and registered the first home win of the year.

The Roadrunners (6-5, 1-4 Pac-12) picked up a decision in the evening's opening match, but Boise State put together four-straight decisions and ultimately won seven of the last nine bouts.

In the final home match of his career, Steven Hernandez picked up his 20th win of the season at 157 pounds, recording a 7-5 victory over Spencer Hill to tie the dual. Chris Castillo (165) put the Broncos ahead in the ensuing match, posting a 6-5 victory over Adam Fierro.

Boise State would lead the rest of the way.

Austin Dewey (174) picked up a 4-2 decision over Jesus Ambriz in double overtime, and then Holden Packard, wrestling up two weight classes, defeated Sean Pollock in overtime, 6-4.

Packard, who has wrestled at 165 all year, picked up his first dual victory of the season while wrestling at 184. Originally from Boise, he earned the win while wrestling in front of a hometown crowd for the final time of his Bronco career.

After a loss at 197, Gaylen Edmo put the Broncos back on the board with a 6-2 win at 285 over Alex Encarnacion-Strand. It was the first dual victory of his career, and the first by a Boise State heavyweight this season.

Carson Kuhn then earned a 10-5 decision over Sergio Mendez, and with the dual out of reach for CSU Bakersfield, seventh-ranked Geordan Martinez put an exclamation point on the victory with a fall over Timmy Box in 1:25.

Boise State will wrestle at Oregon State Sunday, the team's third dual in four days. This year's second edition of the Border War is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. MT, and the dual will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
