BOISE, Idaho - Boise State women's tennis rolled to a 6-1 win against Colorado State Friday at Appleton Tennis Center, for its first Mountain West victory of the season. The Broncos (7-9, 1-1 MW) clinched the win early, taking the first four points of the match.
"This was a really good team effort," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "Doubles got us off to a great start, which is a place we've been having success this season. In singles it was great to see us step up in some tough matchups against difficult game styles."
Boise State picked up the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 wins on courts two and three. Teal Vosburgh and Milena Toseva made quick work on court three to get the first win and run their record together to 9-3 in doubles matches this spring. Moments later, Megan LaLone and Arianna Paules Aldrey wrapped up their win on court two and have now won six consecutive doubles matches together.
The momentum carried over initially, but the Rams (6-8, 0-2 MW) were up to the challenge in singles. LaLone and Paules Aldrey continued their strong day, winning in straight sets on courts two and three, respectively. Still, after Boise State jumped out to early leads in five singles matches, Colorado State battled back and pushed four matches to three sets.
LaLone rolled to her singles win 6-1, 6-0 while Paules Aldrey earned a steady 6-4, 6-4 victory. Paules Aldrey improved her record to 6-9 on the spring, but has found a home at No. 3 where she is now 3-1.
"Megan and Ari have been really playing awesome in doubles" said Roghaar. "They're doing a great job of feeding off of each other's energy. Ari is really starting to understand her game style and executing it at a high level. Megan is one of our toughest competitors. Every time she takes the court, you know she's going to fight. It helps our team not only on the scoreboard but by inspiring the rest of them to do the same."
Bobbi Oshiro jumped out to an emphatic lead, winning 6-0 in the first set but dropped the second 6-1. Oshiro responded with a commanding 6-2 win in the third set to wrap up her second conference win and clinch the team victory as the Broncos took a 4-0 lead.
The teams played out the final three matches, which were all back-and-forth affairs.
Vosburgh held a commanding lead at No. 1 singles in the first set, but saw it slip away and eventually fell behind with a 7-6 loss, falling 7-4 in the tiebreak. She turned it around in the next two sets, winning each by a score of 6-2.
There were more peaks and valleys on Appleton's back courts, where No. 5 and No. 6 singles wrapped up last.
Sammie Watson controlled her first set, 6-0, on court six. A 6-2 decision in Colorado State's favor in the second set sent the match the distance. Watson rebounded with a 7-5 win to claim the match and improve to 9-2 this spring.
Toseva fell behind early after Maddie Buxton of Colorado State took the first set 6-2, but rallied in the second set with an even more convincing 6-1 win to knot the match score. The third set saw Buxton come back from multiple deficits to draw even at 6-6 and force a tiebreaker. Even the tiebreak needed an extra point to be decided as Buxton eventually took that 8-6 for a 7-6 win and Colorado State's lone tally in the team score.
"I was really proud of the way we competed throughout all of the spots, as that's something we've focused on a lot lately," Roghaar said. "It always gives our team a lot of confidence to see us getting better in the areas that we're emphasizing. We're looking forward to carrying that into Sunday morning's match against a tough Wyoming team."
Boise State returns to action Sunday when it hosts Wyoming at 10 a.m., at Appleton Tennis Center. The Cowgirls ended the Broncos' season last year, winning 4-3 at the MW Championship.
