TUCSON, Ariz. - The Boise State sand volleyball team came up short in a 3-2 heartbreaking loss to Cal State Northridge on Saturday in Tucson, Ariz. Sierra Nobley and Sarah Baugh won on court two, while Laney Hayes and Taylor Murphey captured a win on court five to lead Boise State against CSUN on the final day of the Wildcat Spring Challenge. In the three losses the Broncos battled to the end as two of the three went into third sets before the Matadors pulled them out to claim the team victory.
"I thought we played well today and lost a couple of close three-set matches that could have gone our way," said coach Shawn Garus. "It was a good week for us to get started in the sand after everyone else has already played a few matches. I was pleased with the way the team battled against CSUN, we just needed a few breaks to go our way and we would have won."
Hayes and Murphey recorded the first victory of the match for Boise State putting away CSUN's Cieana Stinson and Stephanie Serna in straight sets 21-11, 21-14 at No. 5 pair. It is the second win of the season for Hayes and Murphey.
The second Bronco victory came on court two from Baugh and Nobley. The Boise State tandem also claimed the win in straight sets 21-15, 22-20 over their opponents Mahina Haina and Katie Soto. This was the first win of the season for Baugh and Nobley playing all five contests at No. 2 pair.
The Matadors pulled the tightly contested match out with a pair of three-set victories over the Broncos. Boise State's Kaitlyn Oliver and Maddi Osburn rallied from one set down to force a third frame before falling 21-17, 19-21, 15-12 on court four. That was followed by Hannah Hubbard and Maddy O'Donnell on court one where they also battled back after dropping the opening set. Unfortunately, they came up short in set three losing 21-17, 11-21, 15-10.
This concludes the opening week for the Broncos in Arizona where they went 0-5. The Blue and Orange will hit the road again this coming weekend when Boise State heads to Sacramento, Calif., for the Sacramento State Invitational, Friday through Sunday, where it will look to turn its fortunes around while playing six matches.
