RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - Boise State junior Sammie Pless opened the 2015 Mountain West Women's Golf Championships with a 1-over 73 Monday, leading the Broncos in the first round of the conference tournament.
Pless began her round with back-to-back birdies at the par-72, 6,291-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course at the Mission Hills Country Club, and added two more on the back nine. Her opening-round score is tied for sixth place following the first day of competition.
San Diego State's Milagros Chaves leads the tournament after shooting 66 (-6), one of only two sub-par rounds on the day.
Holes 16-18 played as the most difficult on the course in the opening round, and the Broncos, like the rest of the field, struggled, combining to go 12-over.
Junior McKenzie Ford, who was 1-under entering the 17th hole, closed with a double bogey and a bogey to finish 2-over (74) and tied for ninth place. Sophomore Dana Clary, making her first appearance at the MW Championships, began her round with 13-consecutive pars, but bogeyed three of her final five holes to finish at 75 (+3). She will enter Tuesday's second round tied for 14th.
"We got off to a great start today and made some birdies early, which helped when we got to some of the more difficult holes," head coach Nicole Bird said. "The good news is we are still within striking distance.
"The conditions were perfect today, and should be tomorrow as well. We will make a few adjustments so we finish better tomorrow, and we will be right in it."
Boise State is in fifth place at 301 (+13), two strokes back of a third-place tie between 20th-ranked UNLV and Nevada. San Diego State, ranked No. 27 nationally, leads the tournament at 288 (E).
Sophomore Genevieve Ling and junior Samantha Martin each shot 79 (+7), rounding out the scoring for the Broncos.
Boise State is scheduled to begin teeing off Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
