Gritty Broncos Storm Back for Win at Air Force

Final Stats

USAFA, Colo. - Boise State women's tennis rebounded from a shaky start to claim a 4-3 win Friday, at Air Force. It is the first win away from home for the Broncos (8-10) this season. They also improve to 2-2 in Mountain West play and 2-1 in the Mountain Division.

"Today was all about competing and we had to show some incredible fortitude to come out on top ion this one," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "Air Force is an incredibly difficult atmosphere to play in. How disciplined they are, how well they compete and the altitude up here makes for a really tough situation for sure."

Air Force (15-6) jumped out to an early lead with a convincing win in doubles. The Falcons took matches on courts two and three 6-2. The Broncos' top pairing of Bobbi Oshiro and Sammie Watson won 6-0 on court one.

Boise State started to regroup in the first flight of singles. The match was played indoors, meaning only four courts could be in action simultaneously. The top four singles matches took the courts first. Each school took the first set in two matches, but the tide turned toward the blue and orange in the second set.

The Broncos won the second set on all four courts, including Bobbi Oshiro's 6-2 decision to wrap up a straight-sets win at No. 4 singles (7-5, 6-2) and tie the team score. Oshiro is now 5-1 on court four this season, including a 4-0 mark in Mountain West matches.

Megan LaLone also won in straight sets at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-3, to put the Broncos ahead. The victories by Oshiro and LaLone allowed the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches to get started as the Broncos mounted their rally.

Teal Vosburgh exemplified the comeback effort on court one. Vosburgh fell behind with a 6-0 loss in the first set. She stormed back for a 6-3 win in the second set and finished the job with a 6-3 decision in the third set, putting the Broncos up 3-1 and needing just one more win to clinch.

Vosburgh shook off a similar match in her last outing that resulted in a loss and was able to close out the rally against the Falcons. Against Wyoming Sunday, Vosburgh dropped the first set 6-0, won the second set 6-2 and led in the third set 5-3. She eventually fell 7-5 in the third set as the Cowgirls won 4-3. Friday was nearly the same story with a happier ending.

On court three, Arianna Paules Aldrey and Air Force's Chloe Forlini swapped 6-4 victories in the first two sets. Paules Aldrey had a chance to give the Broncos the win but Forlini was up to the task. The Falcon used a 6-3 win in the third set to keep Air Force's hopes afloat.

Sammie Watson swiftly smothered any chance the Falcons had. Watson made quick work of Lily Forlini at No. 5 singles, winning 6-1, 6-4 and claiming the team match for the Broncos. Watson, a senior from nearby Denver, won her fourth straight match and picked up her ninth win in the last 10 decisions.

"I'm really proud of the team's effort and maturity today," Roghaar said. "The way we fought back after losing the doubles point I think tells us everything we need to know about each other this year."

Naomi de Hart made just her second singles appearance of the spring, playing at No. 6. In the last match to finish, de Hart fell 6-4, 7-5.

Last season against Air Force the Broncos also lost the doubles point before winning all six singles matches. Boise State is now 5-1 all-time against the Falcons.

"We're taking good steps forward and we aren't done yet," Roghaar exclaimed. "We'll hop in the vans and head down to New Mexico tonight to prepare for a great match on Sunday."

The Broncos will take on No. 49 New Mexico Sunday, at 10 a.m., in Albuquerque, N.M. The Lobos are 11-7 this season with a 2-0 mark in conference matches, including a 4-3 win Thursday, against Utah State.
