ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Boise State women's tennis had No. 49 New Mexico on the ropes Sunday, but the Lobos bounced back to claim a 5-2 win in Albuquerque, N.M. The Broncos (8-11) took the doubles point and won the first set in four singles matches before New Mexico (12-7) rallied back.
"We learned a valuable lesson today on how we need to expect certain adjustments from out opponents if we are on a roll early and to be ready to handle those," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "We're still growing- even at this point in the season- and we can take a lot from this weekend."
Teal Vosburgh won at No. 1 singles and partnered with Milena Toseva for the clinching win in doubles on court three. Vosburgh downed Natasha Smith 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 for Boise State's lone singles win.
In doubles, the Broncos started with a 6-3 win from Bobbi Oshiro and Sammie Watson at the top spot. New Mexico evened the score with a 6-4 decision on court two, leaving only a tightly-contested match on court three with the team point in the balance. Vosburgh and Toseva clawed their way to a tiebreak win, earning a 7-6 (7-3) decision.
The doubles win restored order to what had been a strength for the Broncos this season. Boise State won the doubles point in 10 of the first 16 matches of the season, including twice against nationally-ranked opponents. The Broncos opened each of the last two matches in an early hole by dropping the doubles point.
"We got off to the start we wanted after making some good adjustments from Friday's doubles against Air Force," said Roghaar. "We made the plays we needed to make to win the point and carried that momentum into the first set of singles."
The strong play continued for Boise State at the outset of the singles matches. Four Broncos picked up first-set wins, but momentum quickly shifted to the home team. New Mexico claimed the second set on all six courts, including straight-set wins at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions to take the lead.
The Lobos stretched their lead with a quick third-set win on court three, meaning the Broncos would need wins on all three remaining courts to pull off the upset.
Vosburgh and Megan LaLone were locked in back-and-forth battles on the top two courts, while Watson fell behind early on court five. Watson fought back from a 4-1 deficit to take a 6-5 lead in the third set. As Watson's opponent knotted the score and forced a tiebreaker, Vosburgh's win went final, injecting a bit of life into the Broncos' hopes.
LaLone also went to a third-set tiebreak, but the bid fell just short. Watson was downed 7-1 and LaLone fell 7-3 in the tiebreaks. Watson's loss is her first at the No. 5 position this season and just her second setback overall since January.
"I know our young ladies will come out this week ready to continue to learn as they have all season and we'll continue to take positive steps towards our ultimate goal," said Roghaar.
The Broncos- now 2-3 in Mountain West competition- will take a brief hiatus from conference matches. Boise State hosts its home finale Sunday, against College of Idaho. The match begins at noon at Appleton Tennis Center (weather permitting). A ceremony to honor seniors Kaitlyn Brown and Sammie Watson will take place before play begins.
"We are looking forward to seeing Bronco Nation in full force next Sunday for senior day," Roghaar said. "Kaitlyn and Sammie have been incredible players and individuals in our program and it will be a lot of fun to see them compete one last time at home. Please join us to thank them and celebrate their incredible careers."
