AUSTIN, Texas--
Reigning 10,000m national champion Emma Bates punched the first Bronco ticket to Nationals, running to a fourth-place finish in the 10,000m preliminary rounds.

Bates ran a 34:29.05 in the one and only heat of the 10,000m run. Needing a top-12 finish to secure a bid to Eugene, Ore., for NCAA Nationals, she held steady throughout the entire race and crossed the line fourth for the qualification.

Four Broncos advanced to the second rounds, and leading the charge was David Elliott. Elliott posted the top time (3:44.15) in the West Preliminaries in the men's 1,500m field. Elliott held steady in the middle of the pack of the second heat, turning on the heat at the bell lap to finish first in the heat and ultimately first overall. He will race on Saturday at 6:45 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

Hurdle specialists Jordin Andrade and Fernando Martinez put on a show of their own in the 400m hurdles. Andrade (1st) and Martinez (3rd) both automatically advanced to Friday's quarterfinals with their top-three placings in heat two. Andrade holds the second-fastest time going into the quarterfinals with a 50.93, while Martinez ran a 51.56 for 13th overall.

Mackenzie Flannigan also advanced to the second rounds, running a wind-aided (+2.2) 11.42 in the 100-meter dash. Although she placed fourth in her heat, her time was the No. 2 time qualifier to advance to the second rounds.

Leading off the day was Karyna Armstrong in the women's hammer. Armstrong tossed a best mark of 183-2 (55.84m) on her third attempt to place 37th.

Eight Broncos will compete in day two of the West Prelims, starting with Allison Jeffries in the pole vault at 1 p.m.
