LAST TIME OUT: The Broncos opened the season at the Jacksons Open on Dec. 12 at the Ford Idaho Center. The sprinters excelled in the opener, with freshman Chassity Love winning the 300m (39.49) and redshirt sophomore Dusty Fisher claiming the title on the men's side (33.89).
Two of the top returners on the women's team, Jordan Ward and Allison Jeffries, both captured titles in their respective events. Ward won the high jump after clearing 5-8.75 (1.75m), and Jeffries won the pole vault once she recorded a 12-7.50 (3.85m). Boise State's fifth and final title of the day came from Courtney Hutchison in the shot put when she threw a 47-0.75 (14.34m).
Two of the Broncos' distance runners, Tansey Lystad and David Elliott, opened the year at the Hoosier Open in Bloomington, Ind., and both competed in the 5,000m. Lystad clocked a 16:31.61 for third place, making her the third-fastest Bronco in school history. Elliott ran a phenomenal time himself, crossing the finish line in 13:49.82 and further improving his ownership of the second-fastest indoor 5,000m time in school history.
ELLIOTT, MW ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: David Elliott was named the Mountain West Men's Track Athlete of the Week after his performance at the Hoosier Open, giving him his first indoor track weekly honor. Elliott is chasing Forest Braden's school record of 13:47.83 that was clocked in 2006.
XC RUNNERS ARE BACK: After a long, successful cross country season that saw both the men's and women's teams qualify for nationals in the same year for the first time in school history, the cross country runners took a substantial break to recover from a grueling season. This weekend most of the distance squad will shake off some off some of the winter rust by running the mile and a leg in the distance medley relay.
