Broncos' Spring Continues in Los Angeles

Feb. 26, 2016

COACH POTTER'S TIP OF THE WEEK: We are headed to Los Angeles where the weather has been warm and the ground conditions will be much firmer and faster than we've had in Boise. Adjusting to the speed of the greens will be critical to our success. An easy drill that I have all my players do to help adjust to varying green speeds can be done in a few minutes on the putting green before the round:

Take three balls and pick a straight putt from 4-6 feet away from the cup. With the first ball, I want to hit the putt so the ball barely crawls over the front lip of the cup before falling in. With the second ball, I want to hit it in with normal pace and the ball entering the middle of the cup. With the third ball, I want the ball to connect firmly with the back of the cup before dropping in the hole. Once I have holed all three in a row correctly, I will repeat this on a putt that breaks slightly from right to left and then a putt breaking left to right. If you take the time to do this before teeing off you will be amazed at how good your touch is for the pace of the greens and you will hole more putts.

BOISE, Idaho â€" The Boise State men's golf team will travel to Westlake Village, Calif., for the 2016 Southwestern Jones Invitational, hosted by Pepperdine, Feb. 29-March 1.

The tournament will be played at the par-72, 6,992-yard Lakes & Oaks Courses at the North Ranch Country Club, and will consist of two rounds on Monday and a final round on Tuesday. Each day is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (MT).

"This is a premier event," Boise State head coach Dan Potter said. "It's a high-quality field on a course that has hosted numerous collegiate championships, in addition to the NCAA Championships in 1988. You can't ask for a better opportunity than an event like this."

Joining the Broncos and tournament-host Waves in the 15-school field will be Augusta, BYU, Fresno State, Iowa, Lipscomb, Mississippi State, Northwestern, Oregon, Sam Houston State, San Diego, San Diego State, USC and Winthrop.

Live scoring for the tournament will be available at

Boise State will send the following line-up to the event:

The Southwestern Jones Invitation is the Broncos' second tournament of the spring season. The first time out, junior Kyle Mitsunaga finished tied for 16th at the LMU Invitational in Lake Las Vegas, Nev. The Broncos finished tied for ninth place as a team.
