Aggies Sweep Broncos Friday

April 22, 2016

BOISE, Idaho -- Boise State was swept in Friday's doubleheader at Utah State, dropping the opener, 7-6, before falling 16-2 in five innings in the nightcap.

The Broncos and Aggies are scheduled to conclude the series in Logan Sunday at noon, but if Saturday's weather forecast allows for playable weather, the teams could reschedule.

Izzy Serrano had four hits Friday to lead the Broncos (12-30, 4-10 MW). Utah State improved to 21-20 overall and evened their Mountain West record at 7-7 with the sweep.

Utah State 7, Boise State 6: Boise State cut Utah State's lead to one and had the go-ahead run on base in the seventh, but could not finish the rally and dropped Friday's opener, 7-6, at Utah State.

Izzy Serrano, who went 2-for-2 off the bench in the contest, started the rally with a two-out single up the middle. After a double from Rebekah Cervantes, Teauna Hughes bounced a two-run single through the right side. Morgan Lamb was hit by a pitch to put two on, but Utah State brought reliever Katie Schroeder into the circle and she got Corey Hendrickson to pop up to second to end the game.

Utah State took the lead for good with four runs in the fifth, capped by Libby Pederson's one-out, three-run homer that made it 6-4. The Aggies added what turned out to be the game-winning run in the seventh, as Jazmin Clarke scored on Noelle Johnson's sacrifice fly.

Clarke was a thorn in the Broncos' side with her speed, as she stole four bases while going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks. The Aggie leadoff batter reached base and stole second in each of the three frames in which Utah State scored Friday.

In that pivotal bottom of the fifth, Clarke started the frame with a walk and stole second, coming in to score two batters later on Alleyah Armendariz' single. With Noelle Johnson also on board with a walk, Pederson sent a 1-0 offering from Bronco starter Nicole Wilson deep to center and out.

Wilson fell to 6-7 with the loss, allowing six runs on six hits with four walks over four and a third innings. For Utah State, Armendariz picked up her first win of the season, going six and two-thirds and allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits.

Pederson finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBI.

Earlier in the contest Clarke's first walk and steal of second helped put the Aggies ahead 2-0 after the first inning. Boise State overcame that deficit with three runs in the second helped by two Utah State errors. With the bases loaded, Shaelee Pearson lifted a fly ball to center which resulted into a baserunning mix-up as Hendrickson tagged from second although Lamb stayed put at third. The ensuing rundown resulted in a throwing error into center field, allowing Lamb to score with Boise State's first run.

With runners on second and third, Kayla Clausen hit a shot towards second that Aggie infielder Kylie-Rose Dickson couldn't handle, and the error allowed Hendrickson and Makenzie Sullivan to score, making it 3-2 Broncos.

Boise State added a run in the third on Hendrickson's RBI single down the right-field line.

Utah State 16, Boise State 2 (5): Utah State hit four home runs in the second game of Friday's doubleheader, scoring 16 unanswered runs en route to a 16-2 win in five innings.

Victoria Saucedo hit two of those home runs, with her first a three-run shot in the opening frame that highlighted a six-run outburst for the Aggies, erasing an early 2-0 Boise State lead.

Saucedo went 3-for-3 with her two homers, a double and four RBI in the game, while Alleyah Armendariz also hit a three-run shot and finished the game 2-for-3 with five RBI.

The Broncos took the early advantage on an RBI double from Teauna Hughes followed by Rebekah Cervantes scoring on a fielder's choice by Morgan Lamb.

The lead didn't last long as a one-out walk to Sarah Chow and a single by Noelle Johnson led to a two-run double from Armendariz. The Aggies put the next two batters on as well, leading to Saucedo's three-run shot to center to make it 6-2.

Utah State hit back-to-back homers in the third, as Sarina Jaramillo's two-run shot was followed by Saucedo's solo bomb to left.

The Aggies went over the eight-run lead for good in the fourth, scoring seven times to put things out of reach. Armendariz' three-run homer and a two-run single from Sydney Hart highlighted the inning for Utah State.

For the Broncos, Mackenzie McGill took the loss to fall to 3-7, allowing nine runs on six hits with four walks over an inning and a third. Jenna Bassler faced two batters and gave up a pair of runs while Shawna Burke went two and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on six hits.

Johnson got the win for Utah State, allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Izzy Serrano went 2-for-3 to lead the Broncos at the plate.
