COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Boise State’s 18-game Mountain West men’s basketball schedule for the 2016-17 season was announced Tuesday, by the conference. The Broncos will open league play at Utah State. Boise State will have home games on six of the 10 weekends during conference play, including all four weekends in February.
The dates of each game are still subject to change as games can move from Wednesday to Tuesday, and Saturday to Sunday, based on television selections. Mountain West national television partners CBS Sports Network and ESPN will work through mid-August to select games for broadcast on their networks. The selection process for ROOT Sports and the Mountain West Network on Campus Insiders will follow. Last season the broadcast schedule was released in late August.
The conference slate is not a full double round-robin as each of the 11 schools play eight home-and-home series along with one additional home game and one additional road game. The Broncos will not host UNLV and will not travel to San Diego State.
Both of Boise State’s one-game series will take place during the second week of conference play. The Broncos travel to UNLV for a mid-week game Jan. 3 or 4. The budding rivalry between Boise State and San Diego State will only write one regular-season chapter next year, as the Aztecs visit Taco Bell Arena for the first weekend of 2017 (Jan. 7 or 8).
The Broncos will have to wait until 2017-18 to vie for a third-straight win at Viejas Arena. Boise State defeated the Aztecs on the road each of the last two seasons, becoming the first MW team to win consecutive road games in the series since BYU in 2009-10 and 2010-11.
Boise State’s home opener will be Dec. 31 or Jan. 1, against Colorado State. The Broncos and Rams squared off on New Year’s Eve in Fort Collins during the 2014-15 campaign. The home finale for Boise State will be Feb. 28 or March 1, against Fresno State. It is the second time in three years the Broncos will host the Bulldogs on Senior Day. The Broncos clinched the Mountain West regular-season title against Fresno State on the final day of the 2014-15 regular season.
Boise State will have byes Jan. 10/11 and Feb. 7/8, playing no more than seven games between byes. Last season Boise State played 14 games between its first and second bye and the previous year played 10 games following its second bye and the end of the season. The Broncos are the only team in the Mountain West this season to have both byes fall during the middle of the week.
The Broncos are still finalizing their nonconference schedule.
