Mountain West Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West released their cross country preseason poll on Thursday, and both the Boise State men's and women's teams were picked to finish second in a vote by the league's head coaches. Colorado State was picked to win on the men's side, and the New Mexico women were picked to capture what would be their ninth-straight conference title.
The Bronco men received 43 points and one first-place vote while the Rams garnered 46 points and five first-place votes. The other two first-place votes went to Air Force, who is picked to finish third with 40 points.
New Mexico (31) was selected fourth, Wyoming (23) fifth, Utah State (19) sixth, San Jose State (12) seventh and Fresno State (10) eighth.
Last year the Broncos took third at the conference championships, finishing behind second-place Colorado State and the champions, Air Force.
Boise State returns the entirety of their lineup from last year with the exception of the 2015 Mountain West Freshman of the Year Elijah Armstrong who is on a two-year hiatus to pursue a Mormon Mission. 2015 first-team All-MW honoree Michael Vennard, and second-team All-MW selections Chandler Austin and Rhys Park all return for the 2016 season.
The Boise State women's squad collected 92 points and two first-place votes. New Mexico received 99 points and nine first-place votes. Colorado State (79) was picked to finish third and Air Force (67) was pegged to take fourth.
The remainder of the conference preseason poll saw Wyoming (63) fifth, Utah State (56) sixth, Nevada (53) seventh, San Jose State (30) eighth, Fresno State (27) ninth, San Diego State (20) 10th and UNLV (19) 11th.
The Blue and Orange took second place and performed well at last year's conference championships with 71 points, but the eventual National Champion Lobos ran away with the title courtesy of 24 points.
The women will be led by 2015 Mountain West Cross Country Women's Athlete of the Year, Allie Ostrander. Fellow sophomore Brenna Peloquin and senior Anna Holdiman also return as second-team All-MW honorees.
Boise State will compete in their first meet of the season on Saturday, Sept. 3 when they travel to Logan, Utah for the Aggie Invitational.
